The two post lift installation process is the part most shop owners and home garage buyers know the least about, and it’s usually the reason a project either goes smoothly in a day or turns into a week of headaches. This article walks through what actually happens between the day a lift shows up on a pallet and the day you’re driving a car up onto it, so you know what to expect and what questions to ask your installer.

Step One: Confirming the Slab Before Anything Gets Unloaded

Every two post lift installation process we run starts with the concrete, not the equipment. We check slab thickness, age, and condition at each anchor location, because a lift is only as strong as what it’s bolted into. Most commercial two post lifts need at minimum a 4-inch slab with adequate PSI, poured with proper rebar or wire mesh, and cured for at least 28 days. Older Iowa buildings sometimes have thinner slabs poured decades ago, or additions with a seam right where the columns need to sit.

If the slab doesn’t check out, we tell you before the lift ever comes off the truck, not after we’ve started drilling anchors. Sometimes the fix is repositioning the lift a few feet, sometimes it means pouring a new pad. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a two post lift installation process gets derailed halfway through, and it’s also the step that gets skipped most often by installers trying to save a trip.

Step Two: Laying Out Column Spacing and Runway Clearance

Once the slab is confirmed, we lay out exact column spacing based on the specific lift model and the vehicles you’re planning to lift. Spacing that works fine for sedans can be too tight for a full-size truck with dual rear wheels, and spacing that’s too wide wastes usable bay width. We also check overhead clearance, door swing, and how much runway you’ll have to actually maneuver a vehicle onto the arms without clipping mirrors or bumpers on adjacent equipment.

This is also when we mark obstacles above the slab. Overhead lighting, sprinkler lines, ductwork, and support beams can all conflict with a lift that’s taller than expected once it’s fully raised. We’d rather move a layout by six inches now than discover a header beam is in the way after the columns are anchored. Getting this part of the two post lift installation process right up front saves a lot of rework later.

Step Three: Anchoring the Columns

With layout confirmed, we anchor the base plates using anchors rated for the lift’s load capacity, not generic hardware from a big box store. We drill to the specified depth, clean the holes thoroughly, and torque anchors to spec — under-torquing is just as dangerous as skipping anchors altogether. We also plumb each column carefully; a column that’s even slightly out of level can bind the carriage or cause uneven arm swing later.

This step takes patience more than muscle. We double-check plumb on both axes before moving to the next column, because adjusting a column after the overhead beam or cables are installed is far more work than getting it right the first time. Anyone rushing through anchoring is cutting corners on the part of the process that matters most for safety.

Step Four: Installing the Overhead Beam or Cable Routing

Depending on whether you’re running an overhead-style or floor-plate two post lift, this step looks a little different, but the goal is the same: connecting the two columns so they raise in sync. For cable-style lifts, we route and tension cables according to spec, checking for even tension on both sides. For overhead beam models, we set and secure the beam, then verify it doesn’t interfere with vehicle height in your bay. Uneven cable tension is one of the more common issues we find on lifts installed by less experienced crews, and it shows up later as one side lifting slightly ahead of the other.

We also install and test the safety locks at this stage, cycling the lift through its full range empty before any vehicle goes near it. This is a non-negotiable part of every two post lift installation process we run, regardless of how experienced the crew is or how many times we’ve installed that particular model before.

Step Five: Hydraulic and Electrical Hookup

Next comes connecting hydraulic lines and wiring the power unit. We check for leaks under pressure, bleed air from the system, and confirm the motor runs smoothly without hesitation or unusual noise. Electrical work should meet local code, and we always recommend a dedicated circuit sized to the lift’s power unit rather than sharing a circuit with other shop equipment. Undersized wiring is a common cause of premature motor failure, and it’s much cheaper to run the right circuit now than to replace a motor in a year.

We also check that the control switch is positioned somewhere convenient but out of the direct path of vehicle traffic, since a control box that’s constantly getting bumped by mirrors or hoods tends to fail early. Small placement decisions like this are easy to overlook but make a real difference in how long the lift lasts.

Step Six: Load Testing and Safety Checks

Before we call any two post lift installation process complete, we run a full load test with an actual vehicle, not just an empty cycle. We check that both columns rise evenly, that arm locks engage properly, and that the safety mechanisms hold weight the way they’re supposed to. We test at multiple heights, not just fully raised, since some issues only show up partway through the range of travel. We also verify arm restraints and swing locks are functioning, since loose arms are a common complaint on lifts that weren’t fully checked before handoff.
