A good two post lift safety checklist takes about ninety seconds to run and has saved more shops than any warning decal ever printed. The pattern we see over and over is not that technicians are careless — it is that nobody ever showed them what to actually look at. A frayed cable strand, a lock pawl that stopped clicking, a loose anchor bolt on a cracked slab: every one of those gives you warning signs weeks or months before it becomes a dropped vehicle. This is the checklist we teach, in the order we run it.

Start On The Floor, Not On The Lift

Every inspection we do starts by looking down. A two-post lift is only as strong as the concrete holding its anchors, and Iowa shops give us plenty of bad slabs to look at — old dairy barns converted to garages, additions poured thin in the 1970s, floors with control joints running right under a column base. Get on one knee and look at the concrete within about a foot of each baseplate. Hairline surface cracks are usually cosmetic. Cracks that radiate out from an anchor bolt, spall out in a cone shape, or let you see daylight under the edge of the baseplate are not cosmetic, and they mean stop.

Next, put a wrench on the anchor bolts. Most manufacturers spec somewhere in the 90 to 110 ft-lb range for a standard wedge anchor, but check your specific manual rather than guessing. If a nut turns and keeps turning without loading up, that anchor has lost its grip on the hole and needs to be replaced — not just retorqued. We also want to see full thread engagement above the nut and no rust weeping out from under the plate, which usually means water is getting in and the anchor is corroding below the surface. A single loose anchor on a column that leans under load is the failure mode that puts a car on its side, and it is the single most common problem we find when we walk into a shop that has never run a two post lift safety checklist.

Cables And Chains: Where Failures Announce Themselves

Equalizer cables are the part we replace most often, and they almost never fail without warning. Run a shop rag along the length of each cable — not your bare hand. If the rag snags, you have a broken wire strand poking out, and one broken strand means the cable is already past its service life. Look especially at the sheave areas at the top of the columns and at the crossbar, because that is where the cable bends and works hardest. Kinks, flattened spots, rust bloom, and any section where the lay of the strands looks stretched out all put a cable on the replacement list.

While you are up there, check tension. On most overhead two-post lifts the carriages should rise and fall evenly, and a cable that has stretched will show up as one side arriving at the top ahead of the other. On chain-drive designs, look for stiff links, missing masterlink clips, and elongated pins. Cables and chains are inexpensive compared to a bodywork claim, and we keep them on the shelf for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas units precisely because so many shops let them go too long. Locks, Pawls, And The Sound You Should Hear

A healthy two-post lift talks to you. As the carriages travel up, you should hear a steady series of clicks as the lock pawls pass each ladder notch, and you should hear both columns clicking. Silence on one side means a pawl is hanging up, a spring is broken, or the lock cable has gone out of adjustment. That is the exact condition where a hydraulic leak overnight lets a vehicle settle instead of parking on steel.

Test the locks the way they will be used. Raise the lift to a comfortable working height, then lower it onto the locks and confirm you get a solid, even seat on both columns. Shake the vehicle gently by a bumper — a properly locked lift feels dead. Then check the release: the mechanism should disengage cleanly from a single handle pull or air valve, not require somebody to pry on it. On air-actuated designs, listen for leaks at the cylinder and at the tee fittings, because a slow air leak will slowly re-engage or disengage locks in ways you did not intend. We also verify the automatic arm restraints at this point. Every arm should lock when it is loaded and free only when the arm is fully lowered; a worn restraint gear is a five-minute fix that prevents an arm from swinging out from under a rocker panel mid-job.

Arms, Adapters, And Getting The Load Where It Belongs

Most vehicles that come off a lift do not come off because the lift broke. They come off because the load was never right in the first place. Check that all four swing arms move freely, hold their extension, and show no cracks at the weld seams or elongated pin holes at the pivot. Wobble at the pivot pin is normal within a small tolerance and a warning sign beyond it — if an arm can be lifted an inch at the pad, get us out to look at it.

Adapters deserve the same attention. Rubber pads that have gone hard, glazed, or crumbly will slip on a pinch weld, and stacked adapters are a stability problem waiting for the first hard pull on a stubborn bolt. Keep the manufacturer’s adapter kit with the lift instead of collecting a random pile of pucks. Then look at spotting: the vehicle’s center of gravity should sit between the columns, weighted correctly for the drivetrain, with all four pads on the manufacturer’s designated lift points. Trucks and vans need more forward positioning than a front-drive sedan, and EVs with skateboard battery packs have their own pinch-weld rules that will bend a floor pan if you improvise. Hydraulics, Power Unit, And What A Leak Is Telling You

Pop the cover on the power unit and look at fluid level with the lift fully lowered — checking it up top gives you a false reading and leads to overfilling. Low fluid is not just low fluid; it is a leak you have not found yet. Trace the hose from the pump to the cylinder, check the fittings at both ends, and look for the telltale dust-caked wet spot that means seepage has been going on a while. A cylinder rod that comes down with oil film on it has a failing seal.

Watch the lift cycle. It should rise smoothly, without shuddering or stalling, and it should hold position when the handle is released. If it creeps down noticeably, you have either a bypassing lowering valve or an internal cylinder leak, and either one means you stop putting vehicles on that lift until it is repaired. Also check that the lowering speed is controlled — a lift that drops fast has usually lost its flow restrictor or velocity fuse. On the electrical side, confirm the motor runs on a dedicated circuit, the disconnect works, the cord is not spliced or run across the floor, and the up button is a momentary switch that stops when released. Building A Written Two Post Lift Safety Checklist Your Crew Will Actually Use

Verbal knowledge walks out the door with the technician who retires. The shops we work with that have the fewest problems all have the same thing on the wall: a laminated sheet next to each lift, initialed daily. Daily items are the fast ones — floor around the base, cable snag test, lock click on both columns, arm restraint function, no fluid on the floor. Weekly adds a grease point pass on the pivots and sheaves and a quick look at the columns for plumb. Monthly means anchor torque, cable tension, and a full visual on hoses and welds.

Then there is the annual piece. ANSI/ALI ALCTV and the ALI Lift Inspection standard both point to a yearly inspection by a qualified inspector, and most insurance carriers and OSHA-minded safety programs expect documentation of it. When The Checklist Says Stop — And What We Do Next

The hardest part of any two post lift safety checklist is honoring it on a Friday afternoon with three cars waiting. So make the stop criteria unambiguous ahead of time and post them: any broken cable strand, any anchor that will not hold torque, any lock that will not engage on both columns, any cracked weld, any arm restraint that does not lock, any cylinder that creeps under load. Those are lockout-and-tagout items, not “finish this one job first” items. Pull the disconnect, hang a tag, and get the lift off the schedule until it is fixed.
