Start With the Building, Not the Lift
Every bad install we have ever been called to fix started with someone ordering equipment before measuring the room. Before you pick a model, get four numbers: clear ceiling height under the lowest obstruction, slab thickness and age, distance from the intended column location to your electrical panel, and the width between whatever is already bolted down on either side of the bay. Ceiling height governs everything. A clearfloor two post lift with an overhead beam needs roughly 12 feet to raise a full-size pickup without the carrier hitting the crossbar, and shops with 10-foot ceilings almost always end up on a baseplate model instead, where the hydraulic and equalization lines run through a channel on the floor.
Slab is the second gate. We want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and more if you are going above 12,000 lb capacity. Age matters as much as thickness — concrete poured last month has not cured to strength, and we will not anchor into it. Control joints, expansion joints, and old floor drains are the other trap. Anchors need continuous concrete around them, so a column that lands two inches off a saw-cut joint has to move. Walk the bay with chalk and a hammer drill test hole before the crate ever arrives. That single hour of homework prevents the two most expensive outcomes: a lift that will not fit, or a slab that has to be cut out and repoured.
Choosing Symmetric, Asymmetric, or Baseplate
Configuration is where a two post lift installation guide earns its keep, because the wrong choice is not dangerous — it is just annoying every single day for fifteen years. Symmetric lifts set the columns directly across from each other with arms of equal length, which balances the vehicle at its center of gravity and works well for trucks, vans, and anything long. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and pair short front arms with long rear arms, pushing the vehicle back so car doors open between the posts. If you do mostly passenger cars and your techs are in and out of the driver’s seat all day, asymmetric is worth it.
Baseplate versus overhead is a ceiling decision, as covered above, but it also changes your workflow. Overhead models keep the floor completely clear, which matters if you roll transmission jacks and tire carts through the bay constantly. Baseplate models trade a low-profile floor plate for the ability to live in a low building and to put a work bench or exhaust reel directly above the lift. Capacity should be chosen for your heaviest realistic vehicle plus margin — a shop that sees three-quarter-ton diesels regularly should be at 12,000 lb, not 10,000. Power, Air, and What the Electrician Needs to Know
Most two post lifts run a 220V single-phase motor drawing modest amperage, but the details trip people up. The power unit needs a dedicated circuit, properly sized wire for the run length, and a disconnect within sight of the operator. If your building only has 110V available, some models will run on it with a motor swap, but performance suffers and we generally talk shops out of it. Three-phase is common in dealership and commercial buildings and is the better choice when it is available — smoother motor, longer life, less heat.
Air matters too, because the safety lock release on almost every modern two post lift is pneumatic. You need a shop air line to the columns, usually a quarter-inch feed at 90 to 120 PSI. Shops without a compressor sometimes get surprised by this. Have your electrician run the circuit and stub the air line to the planned column positions before install day, not during. When our crew arrives to find no power and no air, the install turns into two visits, and nobody enjoys the second one. Setting, Squaring, and Anchoring the Columns
Here is the part that separates a professional install from a weekend project. Columns get laid out from a chalk centerline, spaced per the manufacturer’s drawing, then squared by diagonal measurement — the two diagonals across the column bases must match within an eighth of an inch. Once the square is verified, we drill anchor holes with a rotary hammer, vacuum the dust out (this is not optional; dust cuts anchor holding power dramatically), and set the anchors to the specified embedment depth.
Then comes plumb. Concrete floors slope for drainage, so almost every column needs shims. We shim under the baseplate until each column reads plumb on a four-foot level in both directions, using full-size shims that support the entire plate, not a stack of washers under one corner. Manufacturers cap total shim thickness — usually around half an inch — and if you need more than that, the floor has to be ground or repoured. After shimming, anchors get torqued to spec with a calibrated wrench, and every one gets rechecked. A properly plumb, properly torqued column carries load straight down into the slab. A leaning one puts a bending moment on the anchors, and that is how you eventually get a cracked baseplate.
Hydraulics, Cables, and First Cycle
With columns anchored, the mechanical guts go together. The equalization cables and sheaves keep both carriages rising at the same rate, and their tension is what makes the lift feel solid. Cables get routed exactly per the diagram — over the right sheaves, no crossed runs, no rubbing on a column edge — then tensioned evenly. Hydraulic hose runs from the power unit to the slave cylinder, fittings snugged, and the reservoir filled with the specified fluid. Most units take AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil; automatic transmission fluid is a shortcut we do not recommend.
The first cycle is a bleed cycle. Raise the carriages empty most of the way, lower them fully, and repeat several times to purge air from the cylinders. Air in the system shows up as jerky travel or one carriage leading the other. Once travel is smooth, we adjust cable tension again — it always changes after the first few cycles — and verify that both safety lock racks engage simultaneously at every position. You should hear the locks click in unison. If one side clicks a beat ahead, tension is off. This is the stage where a rushed install leaves problems that show up six months later as uneven arms.
Testing, Documentation, and Turning It Over
Before the lift goes into service, it gets loaded. We run a vehicle up in stages, stopping to confirm lock engagement, checking that arms hold position, and watching the hoses and fittings for weeps under real pressure. Then we test the lowering sequence, the manual lock release, and the automatic arm restraints. Overhead models get their shutoff bar checked so the vehicle cannot be driven into the crossbeam. Safety decals go on the columns where operators will actually see them, and the ANSI-required capacity plate stays visible.
Documentation is the piece shops skip and later regret. Keep the manual, the anchor torque values, the model and serial numbers of both columns and the power unit, and the install date somewhere you can find it — a folder in the office, not the cab of somebody’s truck.
