Start By Confirming What The Locks Are Actually Doing

Before you touch a wrench, define the symptom precisely. Vague complaints send people down expensive rabbit holes. We put every call into one of four buckets: the locks won’t engage at all, they engage on one column but not the other, they engage but won’t release, or they engage and release but sound wrong — clattering, dragging, or skipping teeth. Each of those points at a different part of the system, and mixing them up wastes an afternoon.

Raise the lift empty, slowly, and listen with your head near each column. On a healthy asymmetric or symmetric two-post, you should hear a crisp double click at every ladder position, both columns within a fraction of a second of each other. Then lower onto the locks and watch the carriages settle. If one side drops noticeably farther before catching, that column’s latch is either out of time or the ladder rack is worn. Do this test with the vehicle off the lift — never diagnose loaded. Air-Actuated Locks: Chase Pressure And Leaks

Many newer two-post lifts release the latches with small pneumatic cylinders fed by shop air. When those systems act up, the symptom is usually a lift that won’t release at all, or one that releases fine in the morning and refuses by afternoon when the compressor cycles low. Start at the source: verify shop air pressure at the lift, not at the compressor gauge across the building. Most units want a steady supply in the range the manufacturer specifies, and a long run of undersized tubing will starve them.

Next, spray soapy water on every fitting, the solenoid, and the cylinder rod seals while the release is held. Bubbles tell you everything. Poly air line gets brittle after a decade of Iowa temperature swings in an unheated bay, and it splits right where it enters a compression fitting. When The Column Itself Is The Problem

Occasionally the locks are perfect and the geometry is not. We’ve been called to lifts where the anchor bolts had loosened enough that a column leaned a half degree under load, twisting the carriage in the column and binding the latch. If the lift is old enough that parts are genuinely unavailable, that’s information — it tells you the equipment is at the end of its serviceable life and it’s time to price a replacement rather than nurse it.
