Why Torque and Concrete Have to Be Talked About Together

Most installers who’ve never dealt with a bad slab will tell you two post lift anchor bolt torque and concrete are separate topics — torque the bolt to spec, done. That’s not how it actually works in the field. A wedge anchor develops its holding power by expanding against the sides of a drilled hole as it’s torqued down. If the concrete around that hole is weak, cracked, too thin, or full of aggregate voids, torquing to spec doesn’t create a strong anchor. It just spins the sleeve against soft material until the concrete itself gives way, sometimes with a dull crack you can feel through the floor.

A 9,000 lb asymmetric 2 post lift and a 15,000 lb heavy-duty lift are not going to use the same anchor bolt torque numbers, and they may not require the same slab thickness either. The manual will typically specify the anchor diameter and embedment depth alongside the torque value, because those three numbers work together. Deeper embedment generally means more holding capacity for the same torque, but only if the concrete depth actually supports that embedment without punching through to a vapor barrier or gravel base underneath. Before anchoring anything, we always confirm actual slab thickness with a rebar locator or a core sample rather than trusting what the building plans say the floor should be. Plans and reality don’t always match, especially in older Iowa shops that have been patched, resurfaced, or poured in sections over multiple decades.

Reading Your Slab Before You Drill

Concrete condition matters as much as the number stamped on a torque wrench. We look for a few things before any anchor bolt goes into a slab: visible cracking near the intended footprint, evidence of previous patch work, expansion joints running through the anchor pattern, and surface spalling that suggests the top layer has weakened from years of chemical exposure or freeze-thaw cycling. Iowa winters are hard on concrete, and a slab that looks fine from six feet away can have surface degradation that won’t hold an anchor properly.

If an anchor point lands on or near an expansion joint or a crack, we relocate the lift footprint rather than torque into compromised material. This sometimes means shifting a lift’s position by a foot or two from where a shop owner originally wanted it, and that conversation is always worth having before installation day rather than after a bolt spins out. We also test-drill a pilot hole in a few spots to feel the concrete quality as we go — soft, crumbly drilling tells us something a torque spec never will.

What Under-Torqued and Over-Torqued Anchors Actually Look Like

Under-torquing an anchor leaves a gap between the plate and the slab that lets the lift rock slightly under load, and that rocking motion works the anchor looser over time even if it wasn’t loose on install day. Over-torquing is arguably worse in bad concrete, because it can crack the material around the anchor immediately, creating a failure point that isn’t visible from the surface. We use a calibrated torque wrench on every anchor, every time, and we check torque values against the exact model and anchor kit being installed rather than a rule-of-thumb number.

After the initial torque, anchors should be rechecked after the lift has been cycled a number of times under load, since bolts commonly relax slightly as everything settles into the concrete. This is a step a lot of DIY installs skip entirely, and it’s one of the more common reasons we get called out for a lift that’s developed a wobble within its first year. A five-minute recheck with a torque wrench a few weeks after installation catches this before it becomes a real problem.

When Existing Concrete Doesn’t Meet Spec
