What an arm restraint actually does — and what happens when it quits
On a two-post lift, each swing arm pivots on a vertical pin at the carriage. Under the arm, or built into the carriage casting, is a toothed gear ring. A spring-loaded pin, plunger, or pawl drops into those teeth and prevents the arm from rotating once the lift leaves the ground. On most designs the restraint disengages automatically when the carriage is fully lowered, so you can swing arms freely, then engages as soon as the carriage lifts off its stops. That automatic behavior is exactly why a failure hides so well — the arms feel fine when the lift is down.
When the restraint stops holding, the arm can rotate under load. That matters because a two-post lift depends on the vehicle’s weight being centered between the columns. If one arm walks forward or backward two or three inches, the pad slides off the pinch weld or frame rail, the load shifts, and you now have a truck on three points instead of four. How we inspect a restraint before we touch a wrench
Our inspection is short and it is the same every time. With the lift fully down and no vehicle on it, we swing each arm through its full travel and listen. A healthy restraint clicks over the gear teeth with a consistent, positive sound. A dead one is either silent or ratchets unevenly. Then we raise the carriages a few inches — empty — and try to rotate each arm by hand. It should not budge. If it moves at all, that arm is the problem child.
Next we get eyes on the hardware. That means looking up under the arm at the gear ring for rounded teeth, missing teeth, and cracked casting webs. We check the pin for straightness and for how far it protrudes when engaged. We look for a spring that has lost length or broken coils. Repair versus replace: where we draw the line
A spring and a pin are cheap, straightforward, and worth doing. If the gear teeth are crisp and only the spring has failed, we clean the bore, replace the spring and pin, lubricate lightly with a dry-film or light grease, and the lift goes back to work the same visit. A pin that is three millimeters short will click into the teeth and hold in an empty test, then skip under 6,000 pounds. So we work from data plates.
