Start With the Safety Locks, Not the Hydraulics
Every two post lift on the market uses a mechanical safety lock system — usually a spring-loaded pawl that engages a ratchet bar on the column — as the actual load-bearing device once the lift reaches height. The hydraulic cylinder does the lifting, but the locks are what’s supposed to be holding the vehicle. If your two post lift won’t hold height, the first thing we check is whether the locks are engaging cleanly on both columns at the same time. A bent pawl, a weak or broken return spring, worn ratchet teeth, or a release cable that’s slightly too tight can all keep the lock from fully seating.

Check the Release Cable Adjustment
A surprising number of drift complaints trace back to a release cable that’s adjusted too tight rather than a failing hydraulic component. The cable runs from the release handle down to the locking pawls on both columns, and its job is to pull the pawls out of engagement when you want to lower the lift. If the cable has too little slack, it can hold the pawls slightly disengaged even when you’re not touching the handle — which means the vehicle’s weight sits on the hydraulic system instead of the mechanical locks, and it slowly settles as pressure bleeds off.
We see this most often after a lift has been serviced or after a DIY cable replacement where the tension wasn’t set to factory spec. The fix is straightforward once you know to look for it: with the lift unloaded and the release handle fully at rest, there should be enough slack in the cable that the locks drop and hold with zero cable tension. Hydraulic Cylinder Seals and Internal Bypass

If it drifts smoothly and continuously even after the locks have clicked in, that’s almost always the cylinder. Check Valve and Lowering Valve Failure
Between the pump and the cylinder sits a check valve (and often a separate lowering/velocity fuse valve) that’s supposed to hold hydraulic pressure in the line when the pump isn’t running. If that check valve has debris on the seat, a worn O-ring, or a weak spring, fluid can leak back through it even with a perfect cylinder and perfect locks. This shows up as slow drift that happens even with the vehicle sitting still and nobody touching any controls.
These valves are inexpensive relative to a cylinder rebuild, and we always check them before recommending bigger repairs. Contamination is the usual culprit — a shop that hasn’t changed hydraulic fluid in years, or fluid that’s picked up moisture and metal fines, will chew through check valve seats faster than clean fluid. Uneven Wear Between the Two Columns
Two post lifts are, by design, two independent hydraulic and mechanical systems tied together by an equalizer cable. Over years of asymmetric use — always parking heavier vehicles a certain way, or one column getting more sun and temperature swing in an unheated bay — the two sides can wear unevenly. One column might hold perfectly while the other drifts, which makes the vehicle tilt slightly as it settles rather than dropping evenly.
This unevenness often gets misdiagnosed as an equalizer cable problem, and sometimes it is — but just as often it’s independent wear in the locks or cylinder on the affected side.
