Every few weeks somebody calls our shop in Ames with a link to a marketplace listing and one question: is this thing worth buying? Start With The Data Plate, Not The Price
The first thing we ask anyone using this used car lift buying guide is simple: send us a photo of the data plate. It is usually a metal tag riveted to the inside of a column or the base of the power unit, and it carries the manufacturer, model number, serial number, and rated capacity. Without it you are buying a mystery. With it we can tell you in about five minutes whether parts are still stocked, whether that model had a known weak point, and roughly what era it came from. A serial number also tells us if the lift was built before or after certain design revisions — the difference between a common latch assembly and one that has been out of production for fifteen years.
Price is the last thing we look at, not the first. A no-name import two-post with no legible plate is a bad deal at any number, because the day a cable frays you own a 2,000-pound steel sculpture. Meanwhile a Rotary SPO series or a Challenger two-post with a readable plate is worth real money used, because the support chain behind it is intact. Everything else is a gamble, and we would rather you gamble with a used pickup than with the thing holding a car over your head.
What A Used Lift Actually Saves You — And What It Does Not
Used equipment saves you on the structure. Columns, carriages, arms, and baseplates are heavy steel that does not wear out quickly if the lift was used indoors and loaded correctly. That is where the value is. What used equipment almost never saves you on is wear parts. Cables stretch and corrode. Slide blocks wear until the carriage rocks. Cylinder seals weep. Hydraulic hoses dry-rot. Latch springs weaken. On a lift that has seen ten or fifteen years of daily shop use, you should plan on replacing several of those items whether the seller mentions them or not.
We tell customers to budget a repair allowance on top of the purchase price — usually a meaningful percentage of what they paid, sometimes more on an older unit. Add rigging and freight, because a two-post weighs enough that you are renting a trailer and a forklift or paying someone. Add concrete work if the slab where it is going is thin, cracked, or unknown. Add the anchors, because used anchors go in the scrap bin, always. When you total that honestly, a used lift still usually wins on price — but the gap narrows fast, and on a badly neglected unit it closes entirely. The Inspection We Would Do If We Were Standing There
Go see it in person, and go see it under load if the seller still has power to it. Cycle it up and down twice. Listen for a cylinder that chatters or a carriage that groans at a specific height — that is a slide block or a bent column, not a lubrication issue. Watch both carriages arrive at the top together. On a two-post, uneven travel means the equalizer cables are stretched, mismatched, or the sheaves are seized.
Then get your hands on the cables. Run a rag along them and feel for broken strands snagging the cloth. Look at the sheaves for flat spots and at the cable ends for corrosion where they anchor. Check every safety latch: they should engage with a crisp click at each notch, and both sides should release together when you pull the handle. Look at the base of each column for rust jacking and at the arms for weld cracks, especially at the pivot pins where the load concentrates. Pull the power unit cover and look for a reservoir slick with oil, which means seals are already going. Where Iowa Buyers Find Decent Used Lifts
The best used equipment in this state rarely hits a public listing. It moves when a dealership remodels, when a body shop consolidates two buildings into one, or when a retiring tech sells his home shop. We hear about a fair number of those because we are the ones pulling the lift out. Dealership trade-outs tend to be the cleanest buys: maintained on a schedule, kept indoors, and usually a name brand with full documentation.
Farm auctions are the opposite end. Equipment stored outside under a tarp for six winters looks fine from twenty feet and is a rust problem up close. Cylinders sitting idle in cold barns pit internally, and cables corrode from the inside out where you cannot see it. We are not saying skip auctions — we are saying discount hard for outdoor storage, and never buy an outdoor-stored lift sight unseen. The other trap is the out-of-state internet deal where freight and rigging quietly eat the savings. Two-Post, Four-Post, Or Scissor: Match The Lift To The Work
The used market skews heavily toward two-post lifts because that is what shops buy new, so that is what gets replaced. If you do brake, suspension, and exhaust work, a used asymmetric or symmetric two-post in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range is the sweet spot, and there are usually several floating around Iowa at any given time. Verify the arm configuration matches what you service — an old symmetric unit puts the door against the column on modern crew cabs and gets frustrating fast.
Four-post lifts show up used less often and hold value better, partly because home-garage buyers want them for storage and partly because they are simpler to relocate. If you are stacking cars or doing alignment work, they are worth hunting for, but check the runways for deck cracking and the slack-cable safeties on all four corners. Scissor and mid-rise lifts are the ones we caution about most in a used car lift buying guide, because the tight linkage geometry means a single bent link or worn bushing set changes how the whole thing lifts, and parts for older mid-rise models can be genuinely hard to source. Capacity honesty matters too: a 9,000 lb lift does not become a 12,000 lb lift because the seller says he lifted a dually with it.
The Deals We Tell People To Walk Away From
Some listings are not worth a phone call. No data plate and no serial number is an automatic pass — you cannot certify capacity or source parts. Visible weld repairs on a column, carriage, or arm mean somebody already broke it and fixed it in a way no manufacturer signed off on. Bent columns are done; you cannot straighten structural steel back to spec. A cylinder with a scored or pitted rod will chew new seals no matter how carefully you rebuild it.
Then there are the softer red flags. A seller who will not let you power it up is hiding something, full stop. Missing arm restraints or a missing latch handle is cheap to fix on a supported brand and impossible on an orphan. A lift that has been disassembled by someone who did not label anything means you are buying a puzzle with pieces missing. And if the seller volunteers that it “just needs new cables,” ask why it has not had them installed — cables are usually the least expensive fix on the list, and skipping them suggests bigger problems behind. Get It Installed, Certified, And Documented
Buying is the easy half. A used lift needs to land on adequate concrete — thickness, strength, and cure age all matter, and a slab that looks fine can be four inches of unreinforced pour over gravel. We test before we anchor. We also set new anchors to spec torque, shim the columns plumb, bleed the hydraulics, adjust the cables so the carriages track together, and cycle the safeties through every notch under load before we hand it over.
The part most people skip is documentation. If you run a commercial shop, your insurance carrier and any ALI-based inspection program will want to see that the lift was installed correctly and inspected annually. Starting that paper trail at installation is far easier than reconstructing it three years later.
