Every week someone calls our shop in Ames asking a version of the same question, and it usually starts with “I think I need a 10,000 pound lift, but I’m not sure.” That’s exactly why we put together this two post lift capacity guide — because the number stamped on the data plate is only half the story. A rating tells you what the columns, carriage, and cables were engineered to hold, but it says nothing about whether the arms reach your truck’s pinch welds, whether your slab is thick enough, or whether the swing arms clear a dually fender. What a Capacity Rating Actually Certifies

A two post lift’s rated capacity is the maximum total vehicle weight the lift is certified to raise and hold, distributed across all four contact pads within the manufacturer’s specified load distribution. That last phrase matters more than most buyers realize. A 10,000 lb lift is not rated to put 5,000 lb on one arm. Manufacturers publish a front-to-rear split — commonly two-thirds on one pair of arms and one-third on the other, or a 50/50 requirement depending on the model. Exceed that split and you can overload a single carriage long before you reach the total rating.

The rating also assumes the lift is installed per spec: correct anchors, correct torque, correct concrete. We’ve walked into shops where a 12,000 lb lift was bolted to a four-inch slab with wedge anchors that had never been re-torqued after the first month of use. The lift wasn’t overloaded on paper, but it was well outside its certified installation, and the rating no longer meant anything. When you’re reading any two post lift capacity guide, remember that the number is a promise the manufacturer makes about a properly installed, properly maintained, properly loaded lift. Break one of those conditions and you’re operating outside the certification. The Common Rungs: 9,000 to 18,000 lb

Most two post lifts sold in the U.S. fall into a handful of capacity tiers, and knowing the tiers keeps the shopping simple. Nine thousand pounds is the entry rung — plenty for passenger cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups, and common in home garages and small independent shops. Ten thousand pounds is the workhorse of the American service bay and the single most-installed rating we handle in Iowa. Twelve thousand pounds gets you into three-quarter-ton and one-ton territory with real margin. Fifteen thousand covers cab-and-chassis work, larger vans, and light commercial fleets. Eighteen thousand and up moves into medium-duty trucks, box vans, and shuttle buses.

The jump between rungs isn’t just about the number. Higher-capacity models generally come with taller columns, longer and heavier-gauge arms, wider drive-through clearance, and beefier cables and sheaves. A 15,000 lb lift is a physically bigger machine that needs more ceiling, more floor, and thicker concrete. That’s the trade nobody mentions when they say “just buy more capacity than you need.” More capacity can mean a lift that won’t fit your building. We’ve had to talk customers down from an 18,000 lb asymmetric because their ceiling was 11 feet and the columns alone needed more than that with the overhead crossbar. What Vehicles Actually Weigh in 2024 and Beyond

Curb weights have crept up dramatically, and this is where a lot of older shops get caught. A 1995 half-ton regular cab was around 4,000 lb. A current crew-cab half-ton with a 4×4 package runs 5,300 to 5,900 lb. A three-quarter-ton diesel crew cab is comfortably north of 8,000 lb. A one-ton dually with a service body can hit 9,500 lb before you add a single tool. Electric trucks changed the math again — battery packs push some full-size EV pickups past 9,000 lb curb weight, and full-size EV SUVs land in the 6,500 to 7,500 lb range.

Then add what’s in the vehicle. Customers forget that a lift raises the vehicle *plus* its contents. A work van full of copper fittings, a pickup with a bed-mounted fuel transfer tank, a plumbing truck with a full water tank — those add hundreds or thousands of pounds nobody accounts for. Our rule of thumb for Iowa shops is simple: identify the heaviest vehicle you’ll ever put on the lift, add 15 to 20 percent for cargo and future vehicle growth, then round up to the next standard rating. A shop that mostly does passenger cars but occasionally sees a farm truck should be shopping 12,000 lb, not 9,000. Concrete, Anchors, and Why the Floor Sets the Ceiling

Capacity is a system, and the weakest link is almost always the slab. Manufacturers publish minimum concrete specs by model — typically four to six inches of 3,000 PSI or stronger concrete for lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range, and thicker with higher strength as capacity climbs. Heavy-duty two post lifts frequently call for six to eight inches. Anchor embedment depth, edge distance from expansion joints, and the age and cure of the pour all factor in.

In Iowa we deal with a lot of older shop buildings and farm shops where the original pour was never intended to carry a lift. We core-test when there’s any doubt, because guessing is how columns start to lean. If the slab is thin, the fix is a cutout and a reinforced footing pad — a day of concrete work that costs far less than a failed installation. Frost heave is another regional reality: unheated pole barns and detached garages in central Iowa move seasonally, and a lift anchored across a control joint will tell you about it within a year. We’d rather relocate a lift eight inches at layout than chase alignment problems for the life of the equipment. Arm Configuration Matters as Much as the Number

Two identical-capacity lifts can behave completely differently depending on arm geometry. Symmetric lifts place the columns directly across from each other and center the vehicle between them — great for trucks and vans, harder for getting car doors open. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns and use shorter front arms, moving the vehicle rearward so doors clear the posts. Most modern shop lifts are versymmetric or adjustable designs that handle both.

Arm reach and pad height are the specs to check against your actual fleet. A 12,000 lb lift with short front arms may not reach the forward lift points on an extended-cab long-bed truck. Low-profile vehicles need drop-in adapters or low-rise pad options to clear rocker panels and side skirts. Unibody vans and EVs often have very specific manufacturer-designated lift points, and if the arm can’t get there, the capacity rating is irrelevant — you physically can’t lift the vehicle safely. We bring a tape measure to every site visit for exactly this reason. Overhead vs. Baseplate and Ceiling Reality

Once you’ve settled on a rating, the next decision is overhead versus floorplate. Overhead models route the equalization cables and hydraulic lines through a crossbar at the top of the columns, keeping the floor completely clear. They need ceiling height — usually 12 feet minimum for a standard 10,000 or 12,000 lb model, more for taller-column versions. Floorplate models run everything through a low channel at the floor, which lets you install under a 10-foot ceiling but leaves a small ramp your creeper and floor jack have to cross.

Higher capacities complicate this. Many heavy-duty two post lifts above 15,000 lb are only offered in overhead configurations, and the columns get tall enough that a standard 14-foot shop ceiling becomes the limiting factor. We measure to the lowest obstruction — not the peak of the roof — because lights, unit heaters, sprinkler heads, and door tracks are what actually stop a rising vehicle. In one central Iowa fleet shop, we ended up specifying a lower-capacity lift in two bays and putting the heavy unit in the single bay with clear height, which solved the problem for a fraction of what raising the roof would have cost. How We Size a Lift for Iowa Shops

Our process is boring on purpose. We ask what you work on now, what you expect to work on in five years, and what the single heaviest vehicle is that could realistically roll into the bay.
