Start With the Work, Not the Lift
Before we talk models, we ask one question: what are you doing under the car most of the time? If the answer involves wheels-off work — brakes, tires, suspension, hubs, axles, exhaust — a two-post is the natural fit. The wheels hang free, you can spin a rotor, pull a strut, and get a wrench anywhere on the underside without a runway blocking your view. If the answer is oil changes, transmission work, exhaust patching, detailing, and parking a second vehicle over the winter, a four-post starts to make more sense. It drives on, it holds the car by the tires, and it doubles as storage.
That distinction is the honest core of the two post vs four post debate, and it is where most bad purchases start. Ceiling Height Is the First Hard Limit

Four-post lifts are generally friendlier to short ceilings because nothing spans overhead, and the total rise is often adjustable at the column stops. The trade-off is footprint: a four-post takes more floor than a two-post of comparable capacity, and you have to leave room to drive on and off in a straight line. So the two post vs four post decision often becomes a swap of one constraint for another — vertical room versus horizontal room. We ask for three measurements on the phone: finished ceiling height, lowest obstruction (door opener, track, light, joist), and usable bay width and depth. From those three numbers we can usually name two or three models that will actually fit and skip the ones that won’t.
Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Hear About
A two-post lift transfers everything through two anchored baseplates. That means the slab under those plates has to be right — typically four inches minimum of good, cured concrete at appropriate strength, thicker for higher capacities, and free of cracks or control joints running through the anchor pattern. We have core-drilled slabs in older Iowa garages and found two and a half inches of concrete over dirt. In those cases we either cut and pour footing pads or we steer the customer to a different solution entirely.
Four-post lifts spread load over four columns and, in many freestanding configurations, do not require anchoring at all for the storage-oriented models. That is a genuine advantage in a garage with questionable concrete or in a rented building where you cannot drill. It is also why the two post vs four post conversation frequently ends in favor of the four-post for home users — not because it lifts better, but because the building will tolerate it. We still recommend anchoring where the manufacturer allows it, and we always check for slope. If you want to store one vehicle over another, that is four-post territory and it is not close. Drive on, lift, park underneath. With optional caster kits you can roll the whole assembly to a different corner of the garage when the seasons change. Add a set of jack trays or a rolling bridge jack and you can still pull wheels when you need to — slower than a two-post, but perfectly workable for a home builder or a collector.
Two-post lifts do not stack. The columns are in the way, and you would not want to leave a car hanging by the arms indefinitely anyway. What they give you instead is speed and access. In a production shop where techs are on and off a lift twenty times a day, the two-post wins on cycle time by a wide margin. That is why most commercial bays in Iowa run two-posts for general service and keep one four-post for alignments and long jobs. Capacity, Vehicle Mix, and Real Iowa Fleets
Capacity is where we see people undershoot. A half-ton crew cab with a topper and a full tank is heavier than most owners guess, and three-quarter-ton diesels get well past what a light-duty lift is rated to hold. We tell customers to pick capacity for the heaviest thing they will ever put on it, then add margin. A 10,000 lb unit handles the vast majority of pickups and SUVs; a farm operation running one-tons and service trucks should be looking at 12,000 to 15,000 lb, and at that point column spacing and arm reach matter as much as the rating.
Vehicle mix also drives the two post vs four post answer in a way spec sheets don’t show. Lowered cars and unibody imports need attention to arm pad configuration and lift-point access on a two-post; long-wheelbase trucks need runway length on a four-post. A rural customer in central Iowa who alternates between a tractor-hauling dually and a Miata is going to be happier with a four-post plus a bridge jack than with a two-post sized for the dually. We ask for the actual list of vehicles, not a category, because the outliers are what cause problems six months in.
Installation, Power, and What the Day Looks Like
Our crews install both styles, and the day plays out differently. A two-post install means laying out the column positions, drilling and setting anchors, torquing to spec, plumbing the hydraulics, routing the equalization cables, and running a power drop — usually a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit for residential, three-phase in a lot of commercial shops. Anchor work is the part that can go sideways if the slab isn’t what we expected, so we bring the tools to deal with it.
Four-post installs skip most of the drilling but add assembly: runways, crossmembers, cable routing over four sheaves, and careful leveling so the vehicle sits square and the safety locks engage evenly at every position. Leveling is the step people rush and regret, because an unlevel four-post makes noise, wears cables unevenly, and can hang up on a lock.
