Before we ever send a quote, we run every shop through the same two post lift spec checklist. It sounds basic, but we’ve seen too many lifts sit on a loading dock for weeks because someone ordered on gut feeling instead of actual measurements. A two post lift spec checklist isn’t paperwork for paperwork’s sake — it’s the difference between a lift that goes in clean on install day and one that gets sent back, or worse, gets crammed into a bay where it never should have fit. Whether you’re a one-bay independent shop or adding a third lift to a dealership service drive, the checklist below is exactly what we walk through with customers across Iowa.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

The first line on our two post lift spec checklist is always ceiling height, because it kills more orders than anything else. You need to measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction directly above the intended lift location — not the general ceiling height of the bay. Lights, ductwork, sprinkler heads, and door tracks all count. A lift rated for a vehicle height at full rise plus the lift’s own overhead structure needs real clearance, and we’ve had to swap orders more than once because a customer measured the wrong spot in the bay.

We also ask about door header height for shops planning to raise a vehicle near an overhead door. If the lift’s arms or the vehicle at full rise won’t clear the door track when it’s time to move equipment in or out, that changes where the lift can go. This is one of the fastest parts of any two post lift spec checklist to check yourself with a tape measure and a ladder, and it’s the one thing we can’t estimate over the phone — we need your real numbers before we recommend a specific model.

Floor Slab Thickness and Condition

Every two post lift anchors into concrete, and the anchors are only as good as the slab underneath them. Our checklist calls for a minimum slab thickness — typically 4 inches of solid, uncracked concrete for most asymmetric two post models, more for higher-capacity commercial lifts. We ask customers to check for control joints, expansion joints, or visible cracking within the anchor pattern footprint before we finalize a location.

Older Iowa shop buildings sometimes have slab that looks fine on the surface but is thinner than code near old floor drains or previous equipment footings. We’d rather find that out during the spec phase than during a failed anchor pull test on install day. If your slab is questionable, we can talk through options, including relocating the lift a few feet, before you ever place an order.

Rated Lifting Capacity vs. Actual Fleet Weight

Capacity is where shops most often get talked into either overspending or undersizing. Our two post lift spec checklist asks what you actually lift, not just today but where your business is headed. A shop doing oil changes and brakes on passenger cars and light trucks is in a different capacity tier than one servicing three-quarter-ton work trucks and heavy vans daily. We look at your heaviest routinely serviced vehicle, not just your average one, and build in margin above that number.

It’s also worth accounting for uneven weight distribution — trucks with heavy front-end packages, plow mounts, or service bodies load the arms differently than a sedan. We’d rather spec one capacity tier higher than have a lift working at its rated limit every single day. This section of the checklist takes the longest conversation, but it’s the one that protects both your vehicles and your techs.

Electrical and Power Requirements

Two post lifts need dedicated power, and voltage mismatches are a common surprise on install day if this step gets skipped. We confirm single-phase versus three-phase availability, voltage, and amperage at the intended install location, plus whether a dedicated disconnect or breaker is already run to that bay. Many older Iowa shop buildings were wired for lighter equipment decades ago and need an electrician involved before lift installation, not during it.

We also ask about compressed air availability nearby, since most two post lifts use air to release the locks. If a bay doesn’t have air lines run to it yet, that’s a separate project to schedule alongside the lift install, not something to discover the morning the crew shows up. Bay Width, Column Spacing, and Vehicle Swing

Column spacing determines what vehicles will actually fit and open their doors once raised. Wide asymmetric columns are great for truck and SUV shops but need more usable bay width than a narrower symmetric setup built for passenger cars. We map out not just where the columns go, but where a raised vehicle’s doors, mirrors, and tires will land relative to adjacent lifts, tool carts, and walls.

We also factor in the swing arc of the arms themselves during positioning, especially in bays with support columns or tight structural walls nearby. This is where a site photo or rough sketch from you saves everyone time — we can flag spacing issues before a lift ships rather than after your crew has already started drilling anchors.

Adapters, Arm Configuration, and Vehicle Mix

Not every two post lift ships with the arm and adapter setup your actual vehicle mix needs. If you service a range of vehicles from compact cars to lifted trucks, standard short arms alone may leave you improvising with blocks or stacked adapters — never a good long-term habit. Our checklist reviews what’s rolling through your bays regularly so we can recommend the right arm length and adapter package from day one.

Unibody vehicles, EVs with battery pack considerations, and heavy trucks all have different factory-recommended lift points, and the wrong arm reach makes hitting those points harder than it should be. Documentation, Certification, and Ongoing Records

The final piece of any solid two post lift spec checklist is what happens after install: keeping the spec sheet, ALI certification paperwork, anchor pull test results, and load rating documentation on file. Insurance audits, OSHA visits, and warranty claims all move faster when this paperwork is organized rather than scattered across old emails.
