Start With the Frame and Welds

Get down low with a flashlight and look at every weld seam for cracking, especially where arms pivot and where the columns meet the base. Check around the cylinder rod and seals for weeping fluid, and look at the fluid itself if you can access the reservoir — it should be relatively clean, not milky or full of metal particles. A slow leak might just need new seals, but a cylinder that’s scored on the inside of the bore usually needs to be rebuilt or replaced entirely.

Run the lift through a full cycle if the seller allows it, watching for smooth, even movement without jerking, shuddering, or unusual noise from the pump. A lift that drifts down on its own after being raised and left to sit has a hydraulic problem, even if it seems minor at the time. This is one of the areas where a pre-purchase inspection pays for itself, because cylinder work isn’t the cheapest repair, and knowing about it before you buy gives you room to negotiate the price down or walk away.

Locking Mechanisms and Safety Systems

Test that the locks engage cleanly at multiple heights and that the release handle or cable works smoothly without binding.

Open the control box and look for corrosion, chewed wiring from rodents, or evidence of water intrusion, which is common on lifts that sat in an unheated building for years. The motor should run smoothly without excessive noise, and the contactor should engage cleanly without buzzing or hesitation.

If the lift has been sitting unused for an extended period, budget for the possibility that seals, gaskets, and electrical connections have dried out or corroded even if everything looks okay on a quick test. It’s common for a lift that ran fine when it was decommissioned to need some electrical attention after months or years in storage. This is a smaller line item than structural or hydraulic repairs, but it’s still worth factoring into your total cost when you’re comparing a used purchase against a new one.

Age, Manufacturer, and Parts Availability

A lift’s age and brand matter almost as much as its physical condition, because a perfectly sound lift from a manufacturer that’s gone out of business or discontinued a model line can become a parts nightmare down the road. Before buying, find the data plate and note the manufacturer, model number, and capacity rating, then check whether parts are still being made for that model. Even after a thorough visual inspection, the only way to really know a used lift is safe is to load test it and have it certified by a qualified technician. This means running it through its full range of motion under actual weight, checking that it holds at height without drift, and verifying that every safety system performs the way it’s supposed to under load, not just when it’s empty. Certification also gives you documentation, which matters for insurance and for any shop that gets inspected by OSHA or a state agency.
