Choosing the Right Lift Type for Alignment Work

Not every lift on the floor belongs in an alignment bay. Two-post lifts can absolutely work for alignment, especially in shops that need the bay to double as a general lift most of the day. The key is picking a model with adequate arm reach, correct lift points that don’t interfere with the alignment camera targets, and a design that lets the front wheels sit on turnplates at ride height. Floor Flatness and Alignment Lift Requirements

Alignment accuracy starts at the concrete, not the lift. Camera-based and CCD alignment systems assume the vehicle is sitting level and square, so any dip, crown, or slope under the lift throws readings off before the technician touches a single tie rod. This is one of the most overlooked wheel alignment lift requirements we run into on Iowa site visits — older shop floors settle over the years, and what was flat when the building went up isn’t necessarily flat now. A proper wheel alignment lift setup includes turnplates that lock during loading and unloading but release freely once the technician starts adjusting angles, letting the wheels turn without the tires dragging on the runway surface. Rear slip plates do the same job for toe and thrust angle work on the back axle.

We typically recommend sizing up rather than matching capacity exactly, since trucks keep getting heavier and shops rarely turn away work that doesn’t quite fit the lift they already own. Underrated lifts also tend to flex more under load, which can introduce the same kind of inaccuracy a bad floor causes.

Weight distribution on the runways matters too, particularly for scissor alignment lifts. If a vehicle isn’t centered correctly, or if the lift’s arms aren’t rated evenly across the platform, the vehicle can sit slightly off-level even on a perfectly flat floor. Electrical, Air, and Utility Planning

Maintenance That Keeps Alignment Readings Accurate

A wheel alignment lift setup that was installed correctly can still drift out of spec over time without regular maintenance. Runway surfaces wear, turnplate bearings degrade, and hydraulic cylinders on scissor alignment lifts can develop slow leaks that let the platform settle unevenly under load. We recommend a maintenance check at least twice a year for alignment lifts in shops running steady volume, checking level, plate function, and hydraulic seal condition each time.
