The biggest mistake we see when a shop is choosing lift weight capacity is basing the decision on the “typical” car that comes through the door instead of the heaviest one. A sedan-heavy shop that occasionally lifts a 3/4-ton diesel pickup needs a lift rated for that truck, not for the sedans. Curb weight alone isn’t enough either — you need to account for aftermarket bumpers, toolboxes, snowplow mounts, and full fuel and cargo loads, all of which are common on Iowa farm trucks and work vehicles.

Understand How Capacity Ratings Actually Work

Manufacturers rate lifts at gross vehicle weight, meaning the total lift capacity number on the nameplate has to cover the entire vehicle, not just the axle you’re working on. A 10,000 lb two-post lift is not automatically safe for two 5,000 lb vehicles stacked or for uneven loading during an engine pull, where weight shifts dramatically toward one end of the vehicle. This matters even more on asymmetric arm lifts, where the front and rear arms may carry different portions of the load depending on vehicle length and wheelbase.

We also remind customers that the rated capacity assumes the lift is installed, anchored, and maintained correctly. A worn cable, a cracked anchor bolt, or a lift installed on undersized concrete can quietly erode the real-world safety margin even though the rating plate never changes. Don’t Forget Scissor and Mobile Column Options

Capacity planning isn’t limited to traditional two-post and four-post lifts. A mid-rise scissor lift is great for tire and quick-service work but usually tops out lower than a full-rise unit, so it’s important to check the rated capacity against your heaviest vehicle just as carefully.
