Every two-post lift arm needs to swing freely to get under a vehicle, but once you’re lifting, that same freedom becomes a liability. Put a full-size pickup or a work van on the same lift, though, and the outward force on the arms increases significantly. A worn restraint that was barely holding on a sedan can let go entirely under a heavier vehicle, allowing the arm to rotate a few degrees at a time as the lift cycles up and down.

This drift is rarely dramatic at first. It shows up as a vehicle that seems slightly less stable at height, tires that don’t sit quite where they did last time, or an arm that visibly sits at a different angle than its mirror on the other post. We’ve walked shop floors in central Iowa where a technician mentioned this exact symptom almost in passing, not realizing it was a restraint issue and not a hydraulic or alignment problem. Left unaddressed, arm drift under load is a real safety concern, not just a cosmetic annoyance, and it’s one of the more preventable failure modes on a lift.

Signs Your Restraints Need Inspection

A few warning signs tell us a restraint needs attention before it fails outright. Listen for the click or clunk that should happen every time an arm locks into a swing position — if that sound has gone quiet or feels weak, the spring or latch mechanism may be worn. Look at the pin or latch itself for visible wear grooves, rust pitting, or bent components; restraints live outdoors in temperature swings and shop chemical exposure, so corrosion is common even on lifts that see moderate use.

Also watch how the arm behaves when you swing it by hand with no vehicle on the lift. It should engage firmly at each detent position with a positive stop, not a soft or mushy feel. If an arm swings past where it should lock, or takes noticeably more force to seat than the arm across from it, that’s a restraint asking for replacement. Restraint Designs Vary by Brand and Model

Not every two-post lift uses the same restraint hardware, and that matters when you’re troubleshooting or ordering parts. Rotary lifts commonly use a spring-loaded pin restraint integrated into the carriage casting, while some Challenger models use a ratchet-tooth latch that clicks through multiple swing positions. BendPak and Atlas home-garage lifts often use a simpler stamped-latch design suited to lighter-duty cycling. None of these are interchangeable between brands, and sometimes not even between model years of the same brand.

This is exactly why we ask for a lift’s make, model, and roughly how old it is before quoting restraint parts. Guessing wrong means a part that doesn’t seat correctly or doesn’t engage at all, which defeats the purpose entirely. Wheeltronic and Older Lift Restraint Considerations

These lifts were built solidly and many are still mechanically sound decades later, but original restraint components can be harder to source and often need cross-referencing to a compatible replacement rather than an exact factory match. If you’re running an older lift and the restraint has never been replaced, treat that as a maintenance item that’s overdue rather than a part that will last forever. Metal fatigue doesn’t announce itself until it fails, and a restraint that’s been engaging thousands of times a year for fifteen or twenty years is well past the point where a proactive swap makes sense.

When you’re ready to order, the fastest path is knowing the lift brand, the model number if it’s visible on a data plate, and whether the restraint is on the front arm, rear arm, or both — because some lifts use different hardware front to rear.
