The question we get asked more than almost any other on service calls is simple: with lift cable replacement, when to replace is the part nobody wants to guess wrong on. We’re Auto Lift Services out of Ames, Iowa, and we spend a lot of weeks driving to shops across the state to look at cables that somebody has been watching nervously for a couple of months. Sometimes we tell the owner the cables have another year in them. More often we tell them the cables should have been swapped last fall. Cables are the cheapest safety-critical component on most lifts and the one most likely to be ignored until something ugly happens, so here is exactly how we make that call in the field.

The Six Conditions That End the Conversation Immediately

There is a short list of findings that take the judgment call off the table. Any broken wire in the outer strand of a lifting or equalizer cable means the set gets replaced — not that one cable, the set. Visible core showing through the outer strands, a flattened section where the cable has been running against a sheave that seized, kinks, birdcaging where the strands have splayed open, or heavy corrosion with pitting under the rust all mean the same thing. So does a cable that has stretched far enough that you can no longer bring the carriages into level with the adjustment nuts run all the way out.

We use a rule of thumb borrowed from crane and elevator practice: six randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay, or three broken wires in one strand, and the rope is condemned. On a car lift cable that is roughly the diameter of a pencil, that threshold arrives fast. When someone asks us about lift cable replacement when to replace, and we find even one broken wire during the walkaround, the answer is that day — we tag the lift out, get the vehicles down, and order cables. Nobody has ever regretted that decision. We have met people who regretted the other one.

Time and Cycles: The Numbers We Actually Use

Cables do not have a stamped expiration date, but they do have realistic service lives. In a busy commercial shop running a 4-post alignment rack or a pair of 12,000 lb two-post lifts eight hours a day, we plan on cable service around the five to seven year mark. In a light-duty independent shop that cycles a lift a dozen times a day, eight to ten years is common. On a home garage 4-post used as a parking stacker — up and down twice a week, dry heated space — we have inspected original cables at fifteen years that still measured clean. Duty cycle matters more than the calendar.

Environment moves those numbers hard in Iowa. Road salt from December through March is the single biggest cable killer we see. Shops with floor drains and washbays, ag operations with fertilizer and manure in the air, and unheated pole barns where condensation cycles every spring all shorten cable life dramatically. A lift installed in a heated, dry, low-humidity building can easily double the life of a set compared to an identical lift in a cold storage building outside Des Moines. If your lift lives in salt season, cut every number above by a third and inspect twice as often.

What a Real Cable Inspection Looks Like

Most of the cable on a lift is hidden, which is exactly why casual glances miss failures. On a 4-post, run the lift to full height and put it on the locks, then get a flashlight and a rag and run a gloved hand along every accessible foot of each of the four cables — the failure you feel before you see it is the wire that snags the rag. Pay special attention to the sections that wrap the sheaves at the top of each column and the crossover sheaves in the crossbeams, because those bending zones fatigue first. Then look at the sheaves themselves for grooving, flat spots, and bearings that won’t spin freely.

On a 2-post, the cables are equalizers, not load carriers, so the symptom set is different. Watch the carriages as the lift rises: if one arm set climbs faster than the other, or the lift chatters and stalls at a certain height, the equalizer cables have stretched unevenly or a sheave is binding. Check the cable ends at the anchor studs for corrosion and for threads run out of adjustment. Symptoms Your Lift Is Telling You Something

Cables usually give warning before they give up. The most common one we hear on the phone is uneven lifting on a 4-post — the vehicle sits nose-high or leans toward one column at height. That is stretch, and stretch means fatigue. Second most common is a lift that drifts down slowly overnight, which is more often hydraulic but can be a cable pulling through a slipping end fitting. Third is noise: a rhythmic tick or a groan that changes pitch as the lift moves usually means a sheave is dry or the cable is riding out of its groove.

Rust bleeding from inside the cable is another one worth taking seriously. If you see orange staining at the low point of a cable run or on the floor under a column, water has gotten inside the strands and corroded the core where nobody can see it. Cables corrode from the inside out far more often than people expect. Lift Cable Replacement When to Replace as Preventive Maintenance

The smartest shops we work with do not wait for symptoms at all. They budget cables as a scheduled wear item, the same way they budget hydraulic fluid, lock latch springs, and arm restraint gears. A set of cables costs a fraction of a single day of downtime for a two-bay shop, and it costs almost nothing compared to a vehicle coming off a lift. When a customer asks about lift cable replacement when to replace and we already know the lift is eight years old in a salty environment, our answer is that the calendar has made the decision for them.

There is a practical argument too. Planned replacement happens on a Saturday morning with the bay empty and the parts already on the shelf. Unplanned replacement happens on a Tuesday afternoon with a customer’s truck stuck in the air and no cables in Iowa closer than a truck freight order. Always Replace in Sets, and Replace the Hardware Too

We replace all cables on a lift at the same time, every time. Cables that have run together have stretched together, and putting one new cable against three fatigued ones guarantees the lift will never level properly — the new cable does more work, the old ones do less, and you have created an uneven load path on a machine holding a vehicle overhead. On a 4-post that means four cables. On a 2-post it means both equalizers. The labor difference between one cable and the full set is minor; the safety difference is not.

While the cables are off, replace the sheaves that show grooving and any bearing that does not spin freely by hand. A worn sheave will chew a brand-new cable in a fraction of its expected life, and we have gone back to lifts where somebody put new cables over old sheaves and had broken wires again inside two years. Getting the Right Cables and Getting Them Installed Right

Cable orders go wrong for one reason: guessing. Length, diameter, end fitting style and thread pitch all vary by model and often by production year within the same model. Before you order, find the serial tag — usually on the powerside column of a 2-post or the inside of a column on a 4-post — and get us the model number and serial. If the tag is gone or painted over, photos of the cable ends and a tape measure across the columns will usually get us there. We have matched cables for lifts whose manufacturers went out of business twenty years ago, and we would rather spend ten minutes on identification than ship the wrong set.

Installation is within reach of a competent shop, but there are real hazards: the vehicle must be off the lift, the carriages need to be blocked mechanically before anything comes loose, and final leveling has to be verified at multiple heights with the locks engaging simultaneously.
