This lift cable replacement guide comes straight out of our service trucks, not a manufacturer marketing folder. We’re Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and between installs and repairs our crew pulls and re-runs equalizer and lifting cables on two-post, four-post, and scissor lifts almost every week — in dealership service bays, farm shops, municipal garages, and home garages across the state. Cables are the single most common wear item we replace, and they’re also the part most often ignored until a lift starts sitting crooked or a safety lock stops setting. What follows is the same walk-through we give shop owners on the phone: how to know when cables are done, what you need on hand, and how to do the job without wrecking your afternoon.

When Cables Are Actually Done — Not Just Dirty

The first question in any lift cable replacement guide should be whether you truly need cables at all. Plenty of the lifts we look at have grimy, dusty cable runs that are perfectly serviceable, and plenty of clean-looking cables are one lift cycle from failure. What matters is the wire itself. Run a shop rag slowly along the full length of each cable with the carriages at the bottom. If the rag snags, you have broken wires — what old-timers call meat hooks — and that cable is scrap. Any bird-caging, kinking, flat spots, or visible core is the same answer.

Beyond broken strands, we look for three things. Corrosion is a big one in Iowa: salt drips off vehicles all winter, pools in the base plate or in the crossbeam trough, and eats the cable from the inside where you can’t see it. Second, stretch. If you’ve run out of adjustment threads at the sheave anchors and the carriages still won’t level, the cable has permanently elongated and no amount of turning nuts will fix it. Third, age. On a busy two-post that cycles thirty or forty times a day, ten years is a long life; on a home lift used twice a month, twenty is realistic. When a customer tells us the safety locks on one column engage a full notch before the other side, we already know the answer before we drive out.

Know Which Cable You’re Replacing

People use the words loosely, and it causes a lot of wrong parts to get shipped. On a two-post lift, the cables you’re dealing with are equalizer cables. They don’t lift the vehicle — hydraulic cylinders do that. The cables simply tie the two carriages together so they rise and fall in sync. That’s why a stretched or snapped equalizer cable shows up as one side climbing faster than the other, or as a carriage that drifts down. On a four-post lift, the cables genuinely carry the load. Four lifting cables run from a single cylinder over sheaves at the top of each column and terminate at the runways. That makes inspection non-negotiable and makes replacement a four-at-once job — never mix a fresh cable with three tired ones, because the new one will take a disproportionate share of load and the old ones keep stretching. Identify the type first, then order by serial number, not by tape measure.

Tools, Parts, and Safety Setup

Nothing here is exotic, but showing up short-handed turns a two-hour job into a full day. We bring a floor jack or two, a pair of tall jack stands rated well above the carriage weight, cribbing blocks, a breaker bar and a full metric and SAE socket set, penetrating oil applied the night before if we can, a wire brush, anti-seize, a good pry bar, and a torch or nut splitter for anchor nuts that have rusted solid. Safety glasses are not optional — cut cable ends spring, and broken strands fly.

On the parts side, order the cables plus the small hardware most people forget: anchor nuts, cotter pins or safety clips, sheave bushings or bearings, and new sheave pins if the old ones show grooving. A worn sheave with a flat-bottomed groove will chew a brand new cable in a season, so inspect every pulley while things are apart. Above all, get the lift fully supported before a single cable comes loose. On a two-post, that means the vehicle off the lift, the carriages resting on their lowest safety locks, and jack stands under the arms. On a four-post, the runways get blocked at a comfortable working height with stands under each corner. Chain or lock the power out so nobody bumps the button. We’ve been called to too many shops where somebody skipped that last step.

Step-by-Step: Pulling the Old Cables

With the lift secured, start at the anchors. On most two-post lifts you’ll find the cable ends threaded through a plate at the top or bottom of each column with a nut and locking device. Soak them, then break them loose. Cut the old cable if you need to — you’re throwing it away — but do not cut it before you’ve traced and sketched the routing. Take photos with your phone at every sheave. Half the callbacks we get on customer-attempted jobs come from cables re-routed on the wrong side of a crossbeam sheave or looped through the wrong hole in the carriage.

As the cables come out, clean everything they touched. Blow the crossbeam trough clear of dirt and old grease, brush the sheave grooves, spin every pulley by hand and listen for dry bearings. If a sheave doesn’t turn freely with fingertip pressure, replace it now. This is also the moment to look at things the cables were hiding: cracked welds at carriage ears, elongated pin holes, weeping cylinder seals, and the condition of the safety latch mechanism. Routing and Tensioning the New Cables

New cables come coiled and stiff. Uncoil them by rolling the coil along the floor rather than pulling a loop off the top, or you’ll put a permanent twist in the wire that will fight you at every sheave. Feed each cable through its route exactly as your photos show, keeping the ends clean and free of grit. A little anti-seize on the threaded ends makes the next service — years from now — much friendlier.

Tensioning is where the job is won or lost. Snug both anchors by hand until the slack is out, then bring the lift up a few inches on power and check the carriages against a fixed reference: a tape measure off the floor to the same point on each carriage. Adjust the nuts a flat or two at a time until both sides read equal. Raise the lift another foot, recheck, adjust, and repeat. Manufacturers generally want the equalizer cables snug enough to keep the carriages level with no more than very slight deflection under thumb pressure — not banjo-string tight, which loads the sheaves and shortens cable life dramatically. Once level through the full travel, verify that both safety locks click into the same notch at the same height. That single test tells you more about your work than anything else.

Testing, Documentation, and What Comes After

Before any vehicle goes back on, cycle the lift empty through its full range at least three times, listening at each sheave and watching for cable jump or rubbing. Then set the locks at several heights and confirm they engage evenly. Load-test with something heavy but expendable — a shop truck, not a customer’s new pickup — and repeat the level check under load, because cables settle. Expect to re-adjust once after the first week of use; new wire rope always seats in slightly. We tell shops to put a reminder on the calendar for that follow-up.

Document what you did. Write the date, cable part numbers, and measured carriage heights on a card in the electrical box or in your lift log. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and having a clean paper trail makes those inspections faster and cheaper. When to Hand the Job to a Pro

We’re not going to pretend every shop should do this work in-house, and this lift cable replacement guide isn’t an argument that you must. If your lift is an inground unit, a heavy-duty four-post over 18,000 pounds, a mobile column set, or anything with an unfamiliar sheave arrangement, the risk of getting it wrong outweighs the labor savings. Same if you can’t safely support the carriages, if the anchors are rusted beyond recovery, or if you can’t source documentation for the model. Older lifts with discontinued cable assemblies sometimes need a custom-swaged cable made to length, and that’s a shop operation, not a garage one.

What we tell customers is simple: a well-equipped shop with two people, a full day, and the correct parts can absolutely handle a standard two-post equalizer cable swap. A four-post lifting cable job is a step up but still very doable. Beyond that, the math changes.
