Most shops treat hydraulic lifts like they run forever with zero attention, and for a while that’s mostly true. But every lift hydraulic service guide worth following starts from the same premise: fluid degrades, seals dry out, and cylinders wear even when a lift looks fine from the outside. We’ve walked into shops where a lift was still “working” but the fluid was black, contaminated with metal shavings, and the packing seals were one hard cycle away from blowing out under a loaded vehicle.

The cost of ignoring hydraulic service isn’t just a repair bill. It’s downtime on a bay you need running, and in the worst cases it’s a safety incident. Any of those symptoms point to worn packing seals or a scored cylinder bore, and neither gets better on its own.

On most lifts, seal kits are a manageable in-house repair if you’re comfortable pulling the cylinder and have the right tools — but getting the bore surface right matters as much as the seal itself. A scored or pitted cylinder wall will chew through a brand-new seal in a matter of cycles, so it’s worth inspecting the bore closely before reassembly. If the cylinder itself is damaged, replacement is usually more reliable long-term than trying to salvage a worn bore. Hoses and Fittings: Small Parts, Big Consequences

Hydraulic hoses don’t get much attention until one fails, and when one does fail it usually happens without warning — a sudden loss of pressure, a puddle of fluid under the lift, or a lift that won’t hold at height. Rubber hoses harden and crack with age and heat exposure, and fittings loosen slightly with years of vibration and thermal cycling.

A power unit that runs but doesn’t build pressure is a strong sign the pump itself needs rebuilding or replacing.

Filters and strainers inside the power unit reservoir catch debris before it reaches the pump, and they need periodic cleaning or replacement just like fluid does — this step gets skipped constantly because it’s out of sight. Building a Realistic Maintenance Schedule

A practical baseline: daily visual checks for leaks or unusual noise, monthly fluid level and hose inspections, and an annual full hydraulic service that includes a fluid change, filter check, and cylinder inspection.
