Up close, it’s a mechanical system that has spent years absorbing vehicle weight, shop dust, and whatever maintenance schedule the previous owner actually followed. We treat every used lift the same way we treat a used car: assume nothing works until you’ve verified it yourself. Rotary and Challenger lifts, for example, have decades of parts support behind them, while some off-brand imports leave you stuck the moment a cable snaps. The inspection starts with research, not with a wrench.
Columns, Anchoring, and the Concrete Underneath
Start at the base. On a two-post or four-post lift, check the columns for rust at the bottom few inches — that’s where moisture pools and eats steel from the inside out. Rock each column gently; any movement at the anchor bolts is a red flag, either from bad anchoring originally or from concrete that’s cracked around the bolt over time. Safety Locks and Arm Restraints
Every lift built for real use should have working mechanical safety locks that engage automatically as the lift rises, plus a lowering mechanism that requires you to actually release those locks before the platform can drop. Test every control — up, down, and any tilt or leveling function if the model has one — and pay attention to how the lift responds.
