When a lift refuses to run and the motor just hums, clicks, or sits dead silent, most shop owners assume the worst before they’ve done any lift electrical troubleshooting at all. We’ve walked into hundreds of Iowa shops where the fix turned out to be a tripped breaker, a loose neutral, or a foot-switch wire chewed by a mouse – not a burned-out motor. Before you schedule a service call or start ordering parts, it pays to work through the electrical system methodically. Start With the Power, Not the Lift
Every good round of lift electrical troubleshooting starts outside the lift itself. Check the breaker panel first – a lift motor pulling higher amperage than the circuit is rated for will trip a breaker repeatedly, and resetting it without investigating just repeats the cycle. Confirm the lift is on a dedicated circuit sized correctly for the motor, usually 220-240V single phase on residential and light-commercial two-post and four-post units. If the breaker holds but the lift still won’t respond, check the outlet or disconnect box with a multimeter to confirm voltage is actually present at the lift’s power cord or junction box.
We’ve also found loose wire nuts and corroded connections inside the disconnect box more often than actual component failure. Iowa’s humidity swings and unheated shop buildings are hard on electrical connections over a few winters. Pull the cover, look for green or white corrosion on the copper, and re-torque every connection while you’re in there. If voltage is present and connections are clean but the lift still won’t wake up, the problem has moved from the supply side into the lift’s own control circuit – which is where most lift electrical troubleshooting actually happens.
Check the Foot Switch and Control Box
The foot switch is the single most common failure point on any two-post or four-post lift, and it’s the first thing we test on every service call. These switches sit at floor level where oil, dirt, and moisture collect, and the internal contacts corrode or the pigtail wire gets pinched under a floor jack or rolled over by a cart. Unplug the switch and jump the connector directly at the control box – if the motor runs, the switch or its wiring is the culprit and it’s a cheap, fast replacement.
If jumping the switch doesn’t bring the motor to life, move to the control box itself. Contactors and relays inside the box are the next weak link, especially on lifts that have seen ten-plus years of daily cycling. Listen for a audible click when you hit the up button – no click usually means the contactor coil is dead or the switch signal isn’t reaching it. A click with no motor response points toward the motor itself or a blown capacitor. Test the Motor and Capacitor Separately
A humming motor that won’t turn is almost always a bad start capacitor, not a bad motor. Single-phase lift motors need that capacitor to kick the rotor into motion, and capacitors weaken gradually before failing outright – so a motor that used to run fine and now hesitates before starting is telling you the capacitor is on its way out. Capacitors are inexpensive and one of the easiest wins in any lift electrical troubleshooting session, so we usually recommend swapping it before assuming the motor itself is bad.
If a fresh capacitor doesn’t solve it, test the motor windings directly with a multimeter set to resistance. Open or shorted windings mean the motor needs replacement, and at that point we compare the cost of a new motor against the age and overall condition of the lift to help you decide whether to repair or consider an upgrade. On three-phase commercial units, motor issues are less common but phase loss from a bad breaker or contactor can mimic a dead motor, so don’t skip the earlier power checks just because the lift is a heavier-duty commercial model.
Don’t Overlook the Limit Switches
Limit switches and locking mechanisms confuse a lot of owners because the lift runs partway and then stops or the motor keeps running but the carriage doesn’t lift. On many two-post lifts, the safety locks won’t release electrically if a sensor thinks the arms aren’t clear or the lift isn’t level, and that safety interlock will shut the motor down mid-cycle even though the wiring is otherwise fine. Clean the sensor and lock mechanism, check for a pinched wire near the moving carriage, and cycle the lift slowly to watch where in the travel the fault occurs.
Four-post and scissor lifts have their own version of this problem with cable-slack sensors or hydraulic-level switches that cut power when something reads out of tolerance. These aren’t wiring failures in the traditional sense, but they get lumped into electrical troubleshooting because the symptom looks identical – the lift just stops responding. Two-Post Lifts Have Their Own Quirks
Two-post lifts run a synchronized cable or hydraulic system between both columns, and electrical faults here often show up as one side running while the other doesn’t move at all. That’s rarely a wiring problem on the stalled side – it’s usually a mechanical binding issue that trips a safety switch, or a control box wired for one motor driving both columns through a hydraulic line rather than dual motors. Before assuming you have two separate electrical failures, confirm whether your model uses a single motor/pump unit or independent units per column.
