An honest ali certification checklist is the fastest way to tell a legitimate vehicle lift from a lookalike that just happens to have a sticker on the column. Often the label is a manufacturer’s own logo, a CE mark, or a printed claim that means nothing in a North American shop. Start With the Label, Not the Brochure
The first line on any ali certification checklist is physical: walk to the lift and find the gold label. It should be affixed to the equipment itself — usually on a column, the power unit side, or near the capacity plate — not printed in a catalog or pasted into a web listing. A genuine label references the third-party validation program, carries a model designation, and matches the lift standing in front of you. If the label lists a model number that doesn’t match the serial plate, treat that as a red flag, not a clerical error. We’ve walked into shops where a label from a certified 10,000 lb two-post had been transferred onto a heavier uncertified unit, and the owner had no idea.
Brochure language is where most confusion starts. Phrases like “meets ANSI standards,” “built to ALI specifications,” or “certification pending” are marketing, not validation. Certification is a pass/fail outcome of independent testing against the current ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard, and it applies to a specific model configuration. Self-declared compliance means the manufacturer tested itself. That may be perfectly competent engineering, but it isn’t what an insurance adjuster, OSHA inspector, or a dealership’s corporate audit will accept. When a customer in western Iowa lost a fleet contract over exactly that distinction, the fix cost more than buying certified equipment would have in the first place. Look at the label first and let the paperwork confirm it second.
Verify the Model, Not Just the Brand
A brand having certified products does not mean every product it sells is certified. This is the single most common misunderstanding we correct. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas all list certified models — and all of them also sell or have sold accessories, older configurations, or specialty units that fall outside a current listing. Your checklist item here is specific: write down the exact model and capacity from the serial plate, then confirm that exact string appears in the published directory of certified lifts. Not the family name. Not “the 10K two-post.” The full designation, including suffixes that indicate arm style, column height, or overhead versus baseplate configuration.
We keep this discipline because configuration changes matter mechanically. An asymmetric two-post with three-stage front arms behaves differently under load than the symmetric version of the “same” lift, and certification testing accounts for that. On used equipment the problem compounds: a lift certified in 2004 may have been superseded by a revised standard, and while that doesn’t make the lift unsafe, it does mean the documentation you’ll be showing an auditor is dated. The Capacity and Data Plate Check
Item three on our ali certification checklist is the capacity plate, and it deserves its own stop. Every certified lift carries a legible plate stating rated capacity, and on multi-point lifts, the per-point or per-arm rating. Faded, painted-over, or missing plates are not cosmetic issues — a lift without legible rating information cannot be safely used, because the operator has no way to know the limit. Replacement labeling is available from most manufacturers, and we order it regularly for shops cleaning up after a paint job or a relocation. It’s cheap insurance.
While you’re at the plate, note the serial number and manufacture date. Those two data points unlock everything else: parts compatibility, applicable service bulletins, and whether the unit predates safety features you’d now consider standard, like automatic arm restraints or a second locking mechanism. We had a shop north of Des Moines running a two-post whose plate showed a build date well before arm restraints were required. The lift was structurally sound, but the retrofit conversation needed to happen before we’d certify the annual inspection. Record capacity, serial, and date on the same sheet as your label findings, because an inspector will ask for all three and vague answers slow everything down.
Installation Documentation Counts as Much as the Lift
Certification covers the equipment. It says nothing about whether that equipment was installed correctly, and a certified lift bolted into four inches of cracked slab is a liability regardless of the label. So the next block of your checklist is paperwork: the original installation record, concrete thickness and cure documentation, anchor torque values, and the shim configuration used to plumb the columns. On a two-post, anchor specification is the whole ballgame. Manufacturers publish minimum slab thickness, compressive strength, and edge-distance requirements, and those numbers are not suggestions.
In Iowa we deal with a lot of older buildings — grain-country shops, converted implement dealerships, garages poured in the 1960s. We core-test slabs more often than some installers do because we’ve hit rebar mats, expansion joints, and pockets of gravel where the drawing showed six inches of concrete. If nobody can produce installation documentation for a lift you’re buying used, budget for a full anchor pull test and a slab evaluation before it goes back into service. Annual Inspection Records Are Part of the ALI Certification Checklist
A certified lift with no inspection history is a partial answer. The standard calls for periodic inspection by a qualified inspector, and in practice that means annual for most shop environments — more often for high-cycle operations like quick-lube bays or tire stores. Your checklist should ask for the last two inspection reports, not just the most recent one, because the interesting information is in the trend. Cables that were noted as “monitor” last year and are still listed as “monitor” this year tell you somebody is checking the box without doing the work.
Read what the reports actually say. We want to see specifics: cable condition and slack measurements, lock engagement at each position, arm restraint function, hydraulic leak checks, structural weld inspection, and a note on the safety decals. A one-page form with all boxes marked “OK” and no measurements is a form, not an inspection. If a shop can’t produce records at all, that isn’t automatically disqualifying — plenty of good small shops have simply never been asked — but it moves the equipment into an unknown-condition category, and you should price it accordingly. Watch for the Common Fakes and Gray Areas
Gray-market lifts show up on auction sites and marketplace listings constantly, and they’re getting better at looking legitimate. Warning signs we’ve learned to trust: no serial plate or a plate with a hand-stamped number, manuals with obvious translation errors, hydraulic fittings in metric sizes that don’t match anything on the North American parts shelf, and cylinder or cable specs that no distributor can source. When we can’t find replacement cables and sheaves for a lift, that’s not just a parts problem — it’s a signal the equipment was never part of a supported product line here.
The other gray area is accessories. Adapters, extensions, rolling jacks, and drive-on ramps can void the terms of a certified configuration if they weren’t tested with that lift. We see homemade arm extensions welded up in a shop’s own fab area more than we’d like. It may hold the truck fine, and it also means the lift no longer matches the configuration that passed testing. Turning the Checklist Into a Buying Decision
Once you’ve run the ali certification checklist end to end, you’ll have one of three answers. Best case: current label, matching serial plate, verifiable directory listing, installation records, and two clean inspection reports. Buy it, install it, keep the folder. Middle case: certified equipment with gaps — missing paperwork, an old inspection, unknown slab. That’s usually workable, but it should shift the price and it should come with a plan and a date. Worst case: no verifiable certification, no parts availability, no records.
