Why Maintenance Gets Skipped — And What It Actually Costs
Nobody skips lift service because they do not care. They skip it because the lift went up this morning and came down this afternoon and did not complain. Hydraulic equipment is patient like that. A two-post can run for years on contaminated fluid, a cable can lose a third of its strands and still hold a Silverado, and a lock dog can wear round and still catch most of the time. The problem is that the failure mode is not gradual once it arrives. It is sudden, it is loud, and there is a vehicle involved.
We have priced out the alternative more than once for shop owners doing the math out loud. A yearly inspection plus a set of consumables is a rounding error against a hydraulic cylinder replacement, a bent runway, or three days of a bay sitting empty in the middle of tire season. Add the insurance and liability side and it stops being close. Iowa shops in particular deal with a brutal salt cycle from November through April, and that brine gets tracked onto every surface of the equipment. Rust does not care how busy the schedule looks. The Weekly Walk-Around Any Tech Can Do
The weekly check should take one person about five minutes per lift and requires no tools. Start at the floor: look for hydraulic weeping around the cylinder base, the power unit, and every hose fitting. A thin film that collects dust is a seal starting to talk. Check the anchor bolts on a two-post — not with a wrench, just with your eyes, looking for a bolt that has backed off or concrete that has spalled around the base plate. Look at the columns for fresh scoring or paint transfer, which tells you a slider block is worn or a carriage is running crooked.
Then run the lift empty through its full travel. Listen. A healthy unit rises steady and the locks click evenly on both sides. Uneven clicking means the equalization cable or chain has stretched and the carriages are out of sync. Groaning or chattering at a specific height points at a dry slide surface or a scored column. On a four-post, watch each cable at the sheaves through the whole cycle and look for a strand standing up off the lay of the cable — a single broken wire means that cable is on borrowed time and the set gets replaced, not just the bad one. Have the tech who does the check initial a laminated card on the column. It takes ten seconds and it turns a good intention into a record. Monthly Work: Grease, Fluid, and Fasteners
Monthly is when you actually put hands on the equipment. Grease the lift arm pivot pins and any zerk fittings on the carriages and swing arm restraints. Dry pins are the single most common thing we find on shop lifts, and they cause arms that will not swing freely, which techs then compensate for by muscling the vehicle into position. Lubricate the column slide surfaces with a light film of chassis grease or the manufacturer-specified lubricant — not spray oil, which flashes off and collects grit. Clean the columns first. Grease over road salt is just an abrasive paste.
Check the hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, never partway up, and look at the color while you are in there. Fluid that has gone milky has water in it, which in Iowa usually means condensation from an unheated shop cycling through winter. Dark fluid with a burnt smell means the pump has been running hot. Either one gets changed, and the filter or screen gets cleaned at the same time. Torque-check the anchor bolts on two-post units to the manufacturer’s spec once a month for the first year after install and quarterly after that. Annual Inspection: What Gets Documented
The annual is the one that should not be done in-house, and not because your techs are not capable. It is because an outside inspection creates a document with a date and a signature on it, and that document is what your insurance carrier and your attorney want to see if anything ever goes sideways. ANSI/ALI standards call for a qualified inspection at least annually, and most manufacturer warranties reference it too.
When we come out, we do things a weekly check cannot. We load-test the locks. We measure cable tension and check for internal corrosion at the terminations, which is where cables actually fail — not in the middle of the run. We pull a swing arm restraint apart if it feels loose. We check column plumb with a level, because a two-post that has drifted out of plumb is loading its anchors in shear instead of tension. We inspect the concrete around every anchor for cracking and verify slab thickness if there is any doubt, which comes up constantly in older Iowa buildings where somebody poured a four-inch pad and then bought a 12,000 lb lift. We check the overhead shutoff, the hose routing, the electrical disconnect, and the decals — missing capacity and instruction labels are a real citation, not a technicality. Cables, Locks, and the Parts That Wear Out on Schedule
Some components are consumables and should be budgeted that way. Equalization cables on a two-post stretch and eventually fatigue; four-post lifting cables run over sheaves thousands of times and wear at the bend points. Neither is a lifetime part. Sheaves themselves wear a groove that then chews cables faster, so a cable replacement without checking the sheaves is half a repair. Lock dog springs weaken. Cylinder seals dry out. Arm pins and bushings egg-shape out until the arms have visible play at the pivot.
The practical approach we recommend is keeping a small shelf of wear parts for whatever you run most. If you have six identical two-posts, one set of cables, a lock rebuild kit, and a cylinder seal kit on hand turns a three-day downtime into an afternoon. When you call in for parts, have the model and serial plate handy — on two-posts it is usually on the inside of the power-side column, and on four-posts it is on the column base. Special Cases: EV Weight, High-Cycle Bays, and Cold Storage
Not every lift in your building needs the same interval. A bay that does alignments and brake jobs all day is cycling ten or fifteen times a shift, and cables, locks, and fluid in that unit are aging at three times the rate of the lift in the back corner that sees a transmission job twice a month. High-cycle bays should get the monthly items done every two or three weeks, and their cables inspected weekly without exception.
EV service changes the math too. A loaded Lightning or an EV SUV with a battery pack is heavier than the internal-combustion vehicle it replaced, and the weight distribution is different — more mass low and centered, which changes how the load sits on the arms. A 10,000 lb lift that was comfortable for twenty years can be running near capacity on a regular basis now, and near-capacity operation accelerates everything: seal wear, cable fatigue, lock wear. Temperature swings pull moisture into hydraulic reservoirs, and cold fluid is thick fluid, so a lift that groans on a January morning is not necessarily broken — but it does want an extra fluid check going into and coming out of winter.
Building a Program That Survives a Busy Week
A maintenance program only works if it does not depend on somebody remembering. The shops that do this well all share three habits. First, one named person owns it — not “the techs,” a specific human whose job description includes it. Second, the checks are on paper or in the shop management system as recurring work orders, so they generate a task the same way a customer appointment does. Third, the annual inspection is scheduled a year out, the day the last one is completed, before anyone leaves the building.
