Hydraulics lift the carriages; the cables are equalizers, running over sheaves at the top and bottom of each column and tying the two carriages together so they rise and fall in sync. If one carriage tries to drift ahead of the other, the cables pull it back into line. That is a safety function, not a lifting function, and it is why a stretched or broken equalizer cable does not usually drop a vehicle — it lets the lift go out of level, which is its own kind of dangerous.

The second job the cables do is trip the safety locks. The Failure Signs That End the Debate
