Every layout conversation should start with a real budget range, because that number quietly decides half your other decisions. A shop that’s stretching to cover payroll and parts inventory is not going to spec the same 2 post car lift as a shop with a dedicated capital line for equipment. LED lighting fixtures, HVAC ductwork, and garage door tracks all eat into that number too, so measure at the actual post locations, not just the tallest point in the room. Decide Between Overhead and Drive-Through Configurations

Restoration work often means cars sitting up on the lift for days, not minutes, which changes how you should think about overhead vs. low-overhead two-post designs. An overhead-style two-post gives you more raise height and a simpler frame, but it eats ceiling room. A low-overhead configuration trades a bit of top clearance for a lower overall stack height, which matters if your building has ductwork or a mezzanine cutting into the space above one bay. For a shop doing frame and suspension work on older vehicles, we usually lean toward whichever configuration lets techs walk a car all the way through the bay without doing a three-point turn.

Drive-through orientation also affects your bay spacing more than people expect. If cars need to pass through the bay to reach a paint booth or storage area behind it, the columns need to sit far enough from side walls that mirrors and body panels clear on the way in. We’ve seen shops try to retrofit this after the fact and end up parking sideways instead of driving straight through, which slows everything down. Get this decided at the layout stage, not after the concrete is poured.

Plan Column Spacing Around How Techs Actually Walk the Bay

Column placement isn’t just about fitting the vehicle — it’s about whether a tech can walk around the car comfortably with a cart, a creeper, or a transmission jack while it’s in the air. We ask shop owners how far from the front wall to the posts, and how far from the outside wall to the posts, because those two numbers determine whether you’ll be squeezing past a column every time you need to reach a fender or wheel well. For a restoration shop doing panel work and trim removal, that extra 18 inches of clearance on the walk-around side is worth more than people initially think.

We also look at door swing and rolling jack storage when we’re on-site laying out a bay. A 2 post car lift with tight column spacing might technically fit the vehicle, but if there’s no room left for a floor jack or a parts cart, techs end up working around the equipment instead of the car. This is exactly the kind of thing worth having someone walk your garage and lay it out in person, or at minimum check your concrete depth, before you commit to post locations.

Concrete Readiness Determines Your Timeline More Than the Lift Choice

We get a lot of calls from shop owners mid-build who are pouring a new slab and want to know exactly where the posts need to land before the concrete gets cut. That’s the right instinct. A typical spec we see is a 5-inch slab with rebar and a foam insulation layer underneath, poured to a solid psi rating, but the anchor engagement depth still needs to be verified for whatever 2 post car lift you’re installing. We’ve had jobs where the anchors specified by the manufacturer didn’t fully seat because of slab thickness, and we had to install longer anchors engaged deeper into the concrete to meet warranty requirements.
