How many bays, how much swing room between posts, and how the workflow moves a frame-off project from teardown to paint to reassembly without three technicians tripping over each other. Step One: What’s the Real Budget, Not the Wishlist

Every decision tree starts with money, and we’d rather have that conversation up front than after a shop owner has fallen in love with a configuration that doesn’t fit their number. A basic 9,000 to 10,000 lb 2 post car lift installed runs well below a heavy-duty asymmetric unit rated for 12,000 lb or more, and the gap widens fast once you add options like a low-clearance package or a taller column for lifted trucks. We’ve quoted shops that wanted two units and needed to phase the purchase, buying one now and budgeting the second for next year. That’s a completely reasonable path, and we’ll design the bay so the second post pattern is already planned into the concrete work.

We also ask what the shop is replacing. A Marshalltown shop we’ve talked with is removing two aging in-ground lifts in favor of a pair of two-post units, and that swap changes the budget conversation because the old in-ground pits need to be filled and the floor patched before new anchors go in. If you’re starting from a bare slab, your number is simpler. If you’re demolishing old equipment first, factor that labor into the same decision tree before you ever look at a spec sheet.

Step Two: Symmetric or Asymmetric Arms

Once budget is set, configuration is the next fork. Restoration work involves a lot of door-opening, fender access, and awkward angles while panels are off the car, and that’s exactly where asymmetric arm geometry earns its keep. An asymmetric 2 post car lift swings the arms out further toward the front, giving techs more clearance to open doors and work around the front end without repositioning the vehicle. We had a shop call in asking specifically for the asymmetric configuration on a rotary lift because they’d used one before and didn’t want to go back to a straight symmetric setup.

Symmetric lifts still have a place, especially in tighter bays where the column spacing needs to stay tight and the shop mostly does quick in-and-out maintenance rather than long-term teardown work. If your bay is doing double duty as both a general repair lane and an occasional project bay, we’ll usually recommend symmetric for the flexibility. If it’s dedicated restoration space, asymmetric wins almost every time.

Step Three: Overhead vs. Baseplate Design

Ceiling height and overhead obstructions decide this one for you more often than preference does. Overhead-style two-post units need clearance for the crossbar, which can be a problem in older shop buildings with low trusses or ductwork running the length of the bay. Baseplate lifts route the hydraulic connection through the floor and skip the overhead bar entirely, which matters in a lot of the older brick-and-steel shop buildings we see around east-central Iowa. Before we quote anything, we ask for ceiling height and a photo of what’s hanging above the intended bay.

Anchoring is the other half of this step. A 2 post car lift needs a slab thick enough and cured long enough to hold anchor bolts under load, and we’ve had to walk shops back from a planned location because the floor there was a thin patch poured over an old pit rather than structural slab. We’ll test the concrete before installation, not after, so nobody discovers a problem with a car already loaded on the arms.

Step Four: Bay Spacing for a Restoration Workflow

This is the layout question restoration owners care about most, and it’s rarely just “how wide is the lift.” We map out how a car moves through the shop, from initial inspection, through disassembly, to the paint booth, and back to reassembly, then place the lift where it serves the most stages of that flow. A single 2 post car lift positioned near the front of the shop works well for inspections and quick diagnostics before a car goes deeper into the restoration process. A second unit near the back, closer to the parts and fabrication area, keeps disassembled vehicles up at working height for the weeks they might sit mid-project.

We also plan for clearance between posts and any adjacent equipment, storage racks, or workbenches. Restoration bays tend to accumulate rolling carts, parts bins, and fender covers, and if the post spacing doesn’t leave enough walking room, technicians end up squeezing past open arms with parts in their hands. We always walk the floor with a tape measure before finalizing post locations, not just a drawing on paper.

Step Five: Capacity for What You Actually Lift

Restoration shops handle a wider range of vehicles than a typical repair shop, from lightweight classic coupes to full-size trucks and the occasional heavy fabricated frame. We size capacity to the heaviest vehicle you realistically expect on the lift, not the average, because undersizing a 2 post car lift is a safety problem, not just an inconvenience. Most general restoration work is well served by a 10,000 to 12,000 lb rated unit, but if you’re doing frame-off work on full-size trucks or vintage heavy iron, we’ll spec up.

We also talk about low-clearance models if your shop handles lowered vehicles or has limited garage door height that affects how a car rolls in. Step Six: Install Logistics and Timeline

Once the configuration is locked, we shift to logistics: do you have a forklift on site to unload freight, is there enough clearance for our crew to bring in the columns, and how much lead time do you need before the bay goes offline for install day. Most 2 post car lift installs take a single day once the concrete has cured and anchors are ready, but demolition of old equipment or in-ground pits adds time up front. We schedule around your shop’s project calendar whenever possible, so you’re not losing a bay during a busy restoration deadline.

We also cover equalization and leveling procedures during handoff, because a lift that starts to run crooked under load is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one. If one side lifts faster than the other once a vehicle’s weight comes on, that’s a sign the cables or sheaves need attention, and we’d rather train your team to spot it early than have it discovered mid-lift.
