Differential work is different — it’s more like a suspension job in terms of how much you’re leaning on the underside. The tradeoff we pointed out is that symmetric arms don’t always give you the best door clearance on taller cargo vans, which matters when a tech needs to move in and out of the vehicle with tools during a longer differential service. It also puts more of the reliance on the individual tech remembering to double check the restraint rather than the lift doing anything to confirm it for them. For a smaller fleet with one or two trusted techs who’ve been doing this for years, that’s usually an acceptable risk. For a shop rotating through newer hires, it’s worth thinking harder about.

Configuration Two: Asymmetric Two-Post With Safety-Cam Engagement

The second configuration used an asymmetric arm layout paired with a more active safety-cam engagement system, where the locking mechanism has a clearer visual and audible confirmation when it’s fully seated. This is the setup we ultimately steered the Urbandale fleet toward. Asymmetric arms give better door swing and better weight distribution for vans loaded with cargo racks and shelving, which is common in delivery fleets. When you’re doing differential fluid service, the tech isn’t fighting the door or squeezing past a symmetric arm to get underneath.

The safety-cam engagement also removes some of the guesswork. Instead of a tech just eyeballing whether a pin dropped into a slot, the cam locks with a distinct feel and sound, so there’s less ambiguity about whether the vehicle is actually secured before someone crawls underneath with a drain pan. For a fleet running several vehicles a day through the same bay, that consistency matters more than it sounds like on paper — it’s one less thing a rushed tech has to think about.

What We Told the Fleet Manager About Weight Capacity

Before we even got to arm restraints, we asked what the fleet was actually running through the bay. Cargo vans loaded with equipment can push weight and weight distribution further than people expect, and a 2 post car lift rated on the lower end can be fine on paper but tight in practice once you factor in racks, shelving, and a full load of parts. We walked through actual GVWR on their heaviest vans rather than going off the base curb weight, which is a mistake we see fleets make constantly when sizing a lift.

For this fleet, we landed on a commercial-grade two-post rated well above their heaviest loaded van, which also gave more margin for how the arm restraints and safety-cam engagement perform under a more demanding load like differential service. Undersizing the lift doesn’t just create a capacity problem — it changes how much you can trust the arm restraints to hold steady, because everything on the lift is working closer to its limit.

Concrete, Delivery, and Install Logistics in Urbandale

Like most fleet installs we handle in the metro, the first questions were about the floor. A 2 post car lift needs adequate concrete thickness and, ideally, rebar in the slab — generally around four and a half inches with rebar or six inches without it. Mixing that up is a common mistake we catch during service calls on lifts that weren’t installed by us originally.

Keeping the hydraulic side maintained matters just as much as the arm restraints when you’re running a fleet bay hard. A lift that’s slow to raise or lower because of old or contaminated fluid puts more pressure on techs to rush, which is exactly the wrong instinct during a job like differential service where the vehicle needs to sit rock steady. We recommend fleets treat hydraulic fluid checks as part of the same maintenance routine as checking arm restraint wear.

Making the Final Call for a Fleet Bay Like This

In the end, the choice between the two configurations came down to how much the fleet wanted the lift itself to reinforce good safety habits versus relying entirely on tech discipline. The symmetric setup with basic arm locks isn’t unsafe when used correctly, but the asymmetric two-post with clearer safety-cam engagement gave this particular Urbandale fleet more built-in confidence, especially with newer techs rotating through differential fluid service and other underbody work.
