We hear the same myths every time we drive out to western Illinois to survey a bay for a new hoist: that any concrete will do, that ceiling height doesn’t matter until the lift is bolted down, that a shop built for domestic pickups can just swap in a lift for a low-slung E30 or an air-cooled 911 without changing a thing. Myth 1: Any concrete slab will hold a 2 post car lift

This is the myth that causes the most callbacks. We get calls from shops that poured a slab for general shop use years ago, then decided to add a lift without checking the thickness, cure time, or rebar layout underneath it. A 12,000 lb or 15,000 lb capacity 2 post car lift puts enormous point-loading on the anchor bolts, and if the slab is thin, cracked, or still curing, the anchors will not hold torque specs no matter how careful the installer is.

We’ve had customers pouring a new slab specifically for a lift call us the same week to get ahead of this, and that is exactly the right move. Before we ever schedule an install, we want to know the slab thickness, the age of the concrete, and whether there’s a control joint running through where the posts will sit. For restoration shops handling heavier European chassis with unibody or subframe work, we lean toward the higher end of capacity anyway, and that only makes slab integrity more important. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a 2 post lift install gets delayed or has to be relocated after the fact.

Myth 2: Ceiling height only matters for tall trucks

Shops working on classic European cars often assume low-profile vehicles mean low-profile clearance problems, but it’s the opposite. A 2 post car lift needs enough overhead room to raise the vehicle to full height for underbody metal work, exhaust fabrication, and suspension jobs, and the overhead structure of the lift itself adds several feet beyond the vehicle’s roofline. We’ve walked into shops with 12 foot ceilings that assumed that was plenty, only to find the specific model they wanted couldn’t reach full lift height without clipping a joist or a sprinkler line.

This matters even more in older buildings common across western Illinois and eastern Iowa, where trusses, ductwork, and lighting were installed decades before anyone planned for a lift. We measure actual clear height at the exact spot the posts will sit, not just a general shop ceiling number, because a foot of difference across a bay is common. Some shops without ceiling restrictions get lucky and can run nearly any capacity lift they want, but that’s the exception, not the rule, and we’ve seen plenty of shops assume they had clearance simply because the lift looked compact in a catalog photo.

Myth 3: Any bay works if the lift fits between the walls

Fitting between two walls is the bare minimum, not the standard. A proper site survey for a 2 post car lift accounts for door swing on the vehicle, technician walk-around space, and clearance for adjacent equipment like a parts washer or a rolling toolbox. Restoration shops in particular tend to have more floor clutter than a general repair bay because a car up on a lift for months during a build needs surrounding space for panels, fenders, and fabrication jigs.

We also look at how close the lift will sit to other lifts or columns, because arm swing on both sides needs room to fully extend and retract without hitting a neighboring post. A shop with a Bendpak or Rotary lift already installed nearby sometimes discovers the new unit’s arms interfere with the old one the moment both are raised. Getting a second set of eyes on the bay layout before ordering saves a shop from ordering the wrong footprint or capacity for the space they actually have to work with.

Myth 4: Symmetric and asymmetric arm 2 post car lifts are interchangeable

Restoration and metal work on European cars often means unusual jacking points, low ground clearance, and factory lift points that don’t line up with a generic set of arm pads. Asymmetric arm lifts, which shift the post positioning to open up door swing and improve the lifting angle for typical vehicle weight distribution, work great for most sedans and trucks. But some European chassis, especially older or lower cars being restored, actually lift more securely on symmetric arm configurations depending on where the factory lift points sit.

We walk customers through this before they order because swapping arm configuration after installation is not a simple adjustment — it can mean a different lift entirely. A shop doing frame-off or floor-pan work on a vintage BMW or Mercedes needs arms that reach the right pickup points without excessive swing-out, and that’s a conversation we have during the site visit, not after the crate arrives. Guessing based on what worked at a previous shop is how shops end up with a lift that technically holds the car but fights the technician every time it’s used.

Myth 5: Power requirements are the electrician’s problem, not the installer’s

Every 2 post car lift needs the correct voltage, amperage, and a dedicated circuit, and shops frequently assume whatever outlet is nearest the bay will work. It usually won’t. We’ve walked into installs where the existing electrical was sized for lighting and small tools, not a hydraulic power unit pulling a heavier startup load. This is especially common in older commercial buildings retrofitted for automotive use, which describes a lot of the shop space we see in Iowa and western Illinois.

Coordinating power requirements before install day means the site survey has to include a look at the panel, not just the floor and ceiling. We’ve had installs stall because a shop scheduled the lift delivery without confirming the electrician had actually run the new circuit yet, turning a one-day install into a multi-week delay. Getting this nailed down during the initial quote conversation, alongside questions about forklift access and whether there’s a loading dock, keeps the whole project on schedule instead of leaving an expensive lift sitting in a crate.

Myth 6: Freight and delivery logistics don’t need planning

A 2 post car lift arrives as a heavy, awkward freight shipment, not a package you carry in from the curb. We ask every customer whether they have a forklift on site, because that single detail changes how we quote labor and how long the install takes. Shops without a forklift or loading dock need a different unloading plan, and figuring that out after the truck shows up costs everyone time.

We also ask about site access for the delivery truck itself — tight alleyways, low awnings, and narrow driveways common in older downtown shop districts across western Illinois can turn a routine delivery into a logistics puzzle. Coordinating lead time, confirming who’s responsible for unloading, and lining up install scheduling around the shop’s existing workflow all happen before the lift ever leaves the warehouse. Skipping this conversation is how a simple installation turns into a week of delays nobody budgeted for.

Myth 7: Once it’s installed, a 2 post car lift doesn’t need another look

Shops assume installation is the finish line, but a 2 post car lift needs periodic inspection, especially in a restoration environment where cars sit raised for extended periods and get loaded unevenly during panel and frame work. We’ve inspected multi-lift shops where several units needed attention at once simply because nobody had looked closely since the original install — worn pins, loose anchor bolts, or arm restraints that had slipped out of adjustment.

Getting ahead of this with a scheduled inspection, especially for shops running several lifts across multiple bays, catches small problems like a bent arm or a loose pin before they turn into a safety issue or an unplanned repair bill. We treat installation and ongoing inspection as one continuous relationship, not two separate transactions, because a lift that gets checked annually lasts longer and stays safer than one that only gets attention when something breaks.
