If you’re doing nothing but tire rotations and wheel work on EVs, you might assume any two-post will do. It won’t, and we’ve seen the calls that come in after someone finds that out the hard way. Myth #1: Any 9,000 lb 2 Post Car Lift Handles an EV

This is the myth that costs shops the most money. A lot of new EV specialty owners see a 9,000 lb rating and assume it’s plenty, because their old shop ran gas cars on the same number for years. The problem is weight distribution, not just total weight. EV battery packs sit low and dead-center, and the front/rear split on a lot of these vehicles is nowhere close to what the arms and pads were engineered around decades ago when specs were set for traditional drivetrains.

We’ve had customers call asking about a specific two-post model number, only to find out mid-conversation that their actual fleet mix — a mix of sedans, crossovers, and the occasional pickup-style EV — pushes past what that lift was rated for once you actually load it up with a full-size battery vehicle. If you’re doing tire and wheel work exclusively, that’s lighter duty than full service, but you still need the frame contact points and capacity margin to sit at 10,000 lb or better, not the bare minimum. We’d rather quote you the right capacity up front than have you calling us two years in with a lift that’s tired from being overworked.

Myth #2: Arm Reach Doesn’t Matter for Tire Work

Because tire and wheel jobs don’t require full-frame lifting the way a suspension job does, a lot of shop owners assume arm reach is a non-issue. It matters just as much, maybe more, on EVs. Battery-electric vehicles often have flat underbody shields and different frame rail positions than the shop is used to, and if your two-post’s arms can’t reach the factory-approved lift points without fouling on a battery pan, you’re stuck improvising with pucks and blocks all day.

We spec arm reach specifically against the vehicle list a shop tells us they’re servicing. A Challenger with taller lift height and longer reach arms handles a wider mix of EV platforms than a stripped-down base model built for compact cars. When we quote a two-post for a shop doing volume tire and wheel work, we ask what’s actually rolling through the bay — not just today’s fleet, but what’s coming in the next two or three years, because EV model lineups are expanding fast on this corridor and you don’t want to re-buy a lift in eighteen months.

Myth #3: Drive-On Setups Are Always Better for EVs

Some shop owners hear “battery weight” and assume they should skip the two-post entirely and go straight to a four-post drive-on. For high-volume alignment work that’s true. But for tire rotation and wheel work specifically, a properly rated 2 post car lift gives you full wheel-off access in a fraction of the floor space, and you’re not paying for runway length you don’t need. A four-post is great for storage and driveline work, but it’s overkill and a waste of square footage if wheels-off is 90% of your ticket volume.

Myth #4: All Two-Post Model Numbers Are Interchangeable

We get calls where a shop owner references a model number they found online, assumes it matches what a competitor across the state line is running, and wants an identical quote. Model numbers aren’t universal shorthand — a Rotary two-post and a similarly-priced import unit can carry very different pad configurations, arm sweep, and structural warranty terms. We’ve serviced everything from a Launch Tech unit needing a reservoir seal and footpad rebuild to a Rotary two-post that needed full diagnosis after a shop bought it used without records.

When you’re comparing a 2 post car lift on spec sheets alone, pay attention to arm length options, whether pads are the screw-type replaceable kind or fixed, and what the structural warranty actually covers — some carry two years parts and labor with five years on structural welds, others are shorter. We walk every EV shop through the actual spec sheet line by line before they buy, because the model number alone tells you almost nothing about whether it fits your bay.

Myth #5: Installation Is the Same Everywhere

Shops assume a two-post goes in the same way regardless of the building. It doesn’t. Concrete thickness, whether there’s a pit, and how the shop is laid out all change install timing and anchoring requirements. We’ve had installs delayed because concrete wasn’t cured to spec, and we’ve had installs go fast because a shop had a forklift on site and the truck could unload straight to the bay. If you’re planning an EV specialty shop from the ground up, loop us in on concrete specs before the slab is poured, not after.

We also ask about lead time expectations early. Freight on a two-post from the manufacturer isn’t instant, and shops that call us wanting an install date locked in before the lift has even shipped from the truck are setting themselves up for frustration. We’d rather set a realistic install window and hit it than promise something that falls apart when the truck’s a week behind.

Myth #6: A Used 2 Post Car Lift Is Always the Budget-Friendly Choice

Buying used feels like the obvious way to save money when you’re opening a new EV specialty operation on a tight budget. Sometimes it is the right call. But we’ve quoted plenty of used two-post jobs — Atlas units, older Challenger models — where the shop owner was waiting on a second location to open before pulling the trigger, and the delay meant the lift sat unused for months while cylinders and seals dried out. A used two-post that’s been sitting is not the same purchase as one that’s been running weekly.

Before you buy used, get someone to actually diagnose the unit rather than trusting a listing photo. We’ve done diagnostic visits on used two-posts that turned up lock mechanism failures, cylinder issues, and worn pads that weren’t obvious until we had hands on the equipment. If the seller can’t produce service records, budget for a full inspection cost into your “savings,” because that’s the honest math.

Myth #7: Maintenance Doesn’t Change Because the Vehicle Is Electric

The mechanical wear on a 2 post car lift doesn’t care what powers the vehicle sitting on it, but the frequency and load pattern does shift with EV-heavy fleets. Higher average vehicle weight across your whole bay means cables, cylinders, and pad hardware see more cumulative stress over a year of tire and wheel work than they would in a shop running mostly lighter gas vehicles. We recommend EV-focused shops move to more frequent inspection intervals, not because the lift is different, but because the workload profile is heavier on average.

We also see shops on annual service contracts adjust their visit counts once their EV volume grows — some start with a handful of lifts inspected once a year and move toward a full annual schedule across their whole fleet of equipment as the shop scales. If you’re running multiple bays, get on a consistent inspection schedule now rather than waiting for a lock or cylinder failure to force the issue mid-week when you’ve got cars booked.
