Why Exhaust and Driveline Work Demands a 2 Post Car Lift Over Jack Stands

Exhaust and driveline jobs are exactly the work a 2 post car lift was built for. When you’re dropping a driveshaft, swapping a transfer case, or chasing an exhaust leak back from the manifold, you need the whole underside open with nothing but air between you and the frame rails. Jack stands and a floor jack get the job done, but they’re slow, and they force a tech to crawl in and out constantly to reposition. A two post hoist picks the vehicle up by the frame or pinch welds and leaves the entire chassis exposed, front bumper to rear bumper, which is exactly what a driveline swap or a full exhaust replacement calls for.

We’ve quoted plenty of family shops moving from four post drive-on ramps to a two post setup specifically because driveline work under a four post platform is miserable — the crossmembers and frame are half-blocked by the runways. A CL10 or VLE10 class two post lift, in the 10,000 lb range, handles the pickups and vans that dominate driveline and exhaust work in this part of Iowa without issue. Concrete Slab Thickness: What a 2 Post Car Lift Actually Needs

Column Spacing and Ceiling Height for Two Post Lifts in Older Buildings

Family garages built in stages over generations often have uneven ceiling heights from bay to bay, and that matters just as much as the floor when you’re placing a two post lift. We’ve quoted lifts for garages with clearances under 10 feet, which rules out some full-rise two post models and pushes customers toward a lower overall height unit that still delivers full lift travel for driveline and exhaust access. Column spacing also has to account for the width of the vehicles actually rolling through the bay — a shop working on full-size pickups and vans for driveline jobs needs a wider spread between columns than a shop mostly doing smaller cars.

We measure twice before we ever quote, because moving a two post lift’s footprint six inches in either direction after the anchors are set means new holes, new patches, and a wasted afternoon. In an older building with additions bolted onto the original structure, we’ve found floor elevation isn’t always level from one end of the bay to the other, which the leveling shims on the baseplates need to account for. None of this is unusual for a shop that’s been in the same building through multiple generations, but it’s exactly the kind of detail that gets missed when someone orders a lift online without a site visit first.

Freight, Forklifts, and Getting the Lift Into the Bay

Getting a 2 post car lift from the truck into the bay is its own logistical puzzle, especially for family shops without heavy equipment on site. We ask every customer up front whether they have a forklift, and if not, whether a neighbor’s skid loader or a rented piece of equipment can handle the columns, which typically run several hundred pounds apiece for a 10,000 to 12,000 lb rated lift.
