A lot of family-owned garages we work with have been running on jack stands and a single bay for decades, and they treat a lift purchase like buying a tool instead of like remodeling the shop. That’s backwards. A 2 post car lift isn’t a standalone piece of equipment — it dictates where your workbench goes, where the compressor lines run, and how a plow truck or a boat trailer gets stored once the ground freezes. In southern Minnesota especially, where a shop might store four or five seasonal vehicles from October through April, the footprint of the lift decides whether that storage plan actually works.
We always tell folks to draw the shop floor before they pick a model. If your existing slab is older or thinner, we can still often make it work, but it may limit which capacity lift you can safely install, or require a larger footer poured just under the post locations. Either way, get the concrete question answered first. Everything else in the sequencing — ceiling height, post orientation, seasonal traffic — depends on the lift actually being anchored to something solid.
Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

For a standard full-rise 2 post car lift, you want at least 12 feet of ceiling clearance, and honestly 14 feet gives you more breathing room if you’re lifting anything with a raised suspension or a topper. This is where the third-generation garage really has to think differently than a straight commercial shop. If half your bay space turns into snowmobile, boat, and truck storage every winter, the 2 post car lift needs to sit somewhere that doesn’t choke off the rest of the floor when it’s fully raised and holding a vehicle for weeks at a time. In a multi-generational shop, we’ve found it helps to place controls on the side that keeps the operator facing the open bay, not a wall, so whoever’s running the lift can see if a kid, a dog, or another vehicle is moving through the shop. Matching Capacity to What Actually Comes Through the Door
