Measure Your Ceiling Before You Measure Anything Else

A typical 2 post car lift needs somewhere between 12 and 14 feet of overhead clearance to fully raise a truck without the tires kissing the rafters or lighting. We had a caller from Sioux Center recently who already had the lift on-site and a shop with a high ceiling and six-inch concrete ready to go — that’s exactly the order of operations we want to see. Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction, not just the roofline, because purlins, light fixtures, HVAC ductwork, and door tracks all eat into that number fast.
If your shop has 11 feet or less, that doesn’t necessarily rule out a two post entirely, but it changes which model and column height will work, and it may mean you’re better served by a lower-profile design. Concrete Has to Match the Lift, Not the Other Way Around

A proper anchor slab for a two post generally needs to be at least four to six inches of solid, unreinforced or lightly reinforced concrete, at the psi rating the manufacturer specifies, with no cracks or expansion joints running through the anchor pattern. One customer we worked with was pouring a 15 by 5-foot-8 pad with rebar reinforcement specifically sized for an older Rotary hoist he’d bought secondhand from a dealership — that’s the right way to plan it, matching the pad to the lift before it goes in the ground.
