What does matter is amperage and wire gauge matching the power unit’s motor spec. A lift with a 2 HP motor draws differently than one with a 3 HP unit, and running an undersized wire run from the panel to the lift location causes nuisance tripping and premature motor wear. This is the kind of detail that gets skipped when a farm shop owner buys a used lift off a classified ad without knowing the motor’s actual draw. When we send a quote, we ask for photos of the panel and the run distance from the panel to where the lift will sit, because a 60-foot run needs heavier wire than a 15-foot run to hit the same amperage at the motor.

Ceiling Height, Bay Width, and Where Electrical Fits Into the Layout

Once the power question is settled, the next thing we walk through with farm shop owners is where the columns will actually sit relative to the panel and existing wiring, because moving a run after concrete anchors are set is a hassle nobody wants. For tire rotation and wheel work, you don’t need the tallest lift in the catalog, but you do need clearance for the vehicle’s highest point plus arm swing, and enough width between columns to open truck doors fully. Get your electrician out to the shop before the lift is on a truck, not after.
