Buy above what you think you need today, because farm equipment tends to get bigger, not smaller.
Capacity also affects arm reach and lift height. Trucks and grain haulers need longer arm reach to clear frame rails and differential housings, and taller lift height to give you standing clearance underneath for diff and axle work. Don’t assume every 2 post car lift on the market covers this — confirm arm length and rated height with whoever you’re buying from, and make sure the specs match the actual vehicles rolling through your door, not a generic sedan.
Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms for Diff Service
Asymmetric arm lifts are the more common choice for farm and rural shops because the shorter front arm and longer rear arm give you better door clearance and a more natural stance under trucks. For differential work specifically, that rear arm geometry usually gives easier access around the axle and diff housing than a symmetric setup built primarily for cars. If most of what comes through your bay is pickups and trucks, lean asymmetric.
That said, if your shop splits fairly evenly between cars and trucks, a symmetric configuration can still work — you just need to double-check swing arm clearance around wider truck bodies before you commit. Either way, this is a spec conversation worth having before you buy rather than after, since retrofitting arm geometry isn’t something you do after the lift is bolted to your floor.
Safety Locks, Drain Setup, and Everyday Workflow
Once the 2 post car lift is installed, the parts that get used every single day are the safety lock release and whatever drain and catch setup you’re running for fluid work. We’ve serviced lifts where the safety clicker mechanism stopped releasing cleanly, and that’s not a part to ignore — it’s the thing keeping a loaded vehicle from dropping. Ask about lock mechanism type and how it’s serviced before you buy, not after it starts sticking.
For diff fluid work specifically, plan your oil pan and jack setup as part of the purchase, not an afterthought. A rolling floor jack you can push front to rear under the lift, paired with a drain pan sized for gear oil rather than engine oil, keeps the whole job contained instead of dripping across your shop floor. Buying Used vs New for a Farm Shop Budget

Used equipment can be a smart move for a farm shop on a tighter budget, but condition and service history matter more than the sticker price. Ask what the lift was used for previously, how the cylinders and cables have held up, and whether replacement parts are still available for that model — some older or imported units become hard to source parts for down the road.
If budget is the real constraint, ask about financing options rather than settling for undersized capacity just to hit a lower price point.
