Why an RV Shop Even Needs a 2 Post Car Lift

Most people assume a 2 post car lift is for sedans and pickups, but RV and trailer shops lean on them constantly for wheel bearing service, brake work, and suspension inspection. Trailers and travel trailers don’t have a lot of usable lifting points, and jack stands under an axle mean crawling, awkward angles, and real risk when you’re pulling a hub off a loaded axle. A properly rated two-post asymmetric lift gets the whole unit up in the air, tires hanging free, so a tech can pull a hub, repack or replace bearings, and torque everything back down standing up instead of on their back.

For this shop, the tipping point was volume. They were seeing more bearing failures on older travel trailers and utility trailers than they expected, and every one of those jobs was eating an hour just in setup and teardown with stands and blocks. That meant repositioning the lift columns about three feet from where they originally wanted them. It’s a common story. Anyone installing a 2 post car lift in an older commercial building, especially one that started life as something other than a repair shop, should assume the slab needs checking before anything gets bolted down, not after.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance for Trailers

RVs and enclosed trailers are tall, and that changes the math on a 2 post car lift compared to a typical car shop. This building had close to twelve foot ceilings, which sounds generous until you account for a raised trailer roofline plus the lift’s own rise and the vehicle height once it’s airborne. We measured their tallest regular customer unit, a mid-size travel trailer, and worked backward to confirm the lift’s maximum rise and the building’s clear height would actually work together without anything scraping a bar joist or sprinkler head.

This is also where overhead bar versus no overhead bar becomes a real decision, not a preference. A two-post lift with an overhead crossbar is more affordable and structurally simpler, but it eats into usable height for tall units. For a shop working RVs and enclosed trailers regularly, we generally steer them toward a floor-plate or top-of-cylinder configuration if the ceiling allows it, precisely because every inch matters when you’re loading something twelve feet tall onto a lift with rise on top of it. Getting this wrong means a lift that technically installs fine but can’t actually service the tallest units the shop sees.

Install Day: What Actually Happened

Install day is where plans meet reality. Our crew showed up with the columns, arms, hydraulic unit, and anchoring hardware, and the first hour was spent finalizing exact placement once we could see the bay empty and confirm clearance to a support post nobody had mentioned on the phone. That’s typical. We always ask if there’s a pit, if there’s a forklift on site, and what the ceiling height is before we schedule, but there’s always something you only see once you’re standing in the space.

Anchoring took longer than usual because of the slab situation we’d already flagged, and we ran power to the site since this bay hadn’t had a 220-volt drop before. Once the columns were plumb, squared, and anchored to spec, we ran the arms through a full cycle test, checked the safety locks under load, and walked the owner through arm placement for a typical trailer frame versus a motorhome chassis versus a standard pickup, since this shop services all three. By end of day the 2 post car lift was cycling clean, level, and ready for its first real job.

The First Wheel Bearing Job on the New Lift

About a week after install, the shop ran its first real wheel bearing service on the new equipment: a tandem-axle travel trailer with a grinding front bearing and a rear axle that needed inspection too. Under the old jack stand method, this was a two-hour job minimum with two people. On the 2 post car lift, one tech had the trailer up, both wheels off, and both hubs exposed inside fifteen minutes. He packed the front bearing, found the rear was actually fine on inspection, and had the whole trailer back down and off the lift in under an hour total.

That kind of turnaround is the entire business case for a shop like this. That five-minute habit catches small issues, a slightly loose fitting, a cable starting to fray, before they become a service call.

Safety locks, anchor bolt torque, and arm restraint pins all wear over time, especially in a shop running heavier trailer and RV loads than a typical passenger car bay. This shop scheduled their first annual checkup right around the one-year mark, and we caught a slightly loose anchor on one column, an easy fix during a routine visit but not something you want discovered any other way. First, get the slab checked before you fall in love with a specific spot in the bay, because concrete condition can move your entire layout. Third, plan for power and anchoring surprises on install day, because older commercial buildings rarely match their blueprints exactly.
