A 2 post car lift is the piece of equipment that turns a weekend overlanding hobby into a real home shop, and that’s exactly what we saw last spring when a builder in Council Bluffs called us about getting one installed before a big wheel bearing job on his lifted truck. He’d been doing bearing swaps on jack stands for years, and after wrestling a seized hub at ground level one too many times, he decided it was time. Why a 2 Post Car Lift Made Sense for His Overland Build

This customer runs a lifted, off-road-ready truck with bigger tires and heavier wheel and hub assemblies than a stock vehicle. That combination wears wheel bearings faster, and it also makes bearing service harder on the body when you’re doing it low to the ground. He wanted something that would let him get the wheels off, the hub assembly out, and a new bearing pressed in without laying on a creeper for three hours. A 2 post car lift gets the whole undercarriage open and at a working height, which matters a lot for bearing and CV axle work where you need both hands free and good visibility on the spindle.

We talked through a four-post drive-on option too, since some builders like the built-in runways for storage, but for actual wheel-off bearing work a two-post is simply the better tool. With the vehicle on the arms and the wheels hanging free, you can spin the hub, pull the axle nut, and knock the bearing out without fighting for space. Starting Point: An Empty Bay and No Firm Plan Yet

When we first talked, the garage was basically a clean slate — a detached shop bay with decent ceiling height but no lift, no compressed air routed to where he wanted it, and no clear idea yet of how the space should be laid out. That’s actually a good position to be in, because it lets us sequence the build instead of retrofitting around furniture that’s already in the way. We always ask the same early questions: what’s the ceiling height, is there a pit anywhere in the slab, what’s the concrete thickness and cure date, and is there a way to get a forklift in for unloading.

In his case the concrete was solid and had cured well past 28 days, ceiling height was generous enough for full post height plus swing clearance, and there was enough room to back a delivery truck close to the bay door. Those three things — concrete, clearance, and access — are what we check before anything else, because they determine whether the install happens on schedule or gets pushed. We’ve had jobs delayed by weeks because someone poured a slab and didn’t wait long enough for it to fully cure, so we always confirm that up front rather than assuming.

Sequencing the Build: Lift First, Then Everything Else

The mistake a lot of builders make is buying tool chests, an air compressor, tire racks, and shelving before they’ve settled on where the lift goes. We recommend the opposite order. Once you know your 2 post car lift’s footprint and swing radius, everything else in the shop gets planned around it instead of squeezed in afterward. In this case, we marked the anchor pattern on the slab first, confirmed clearance to the side walls and the overhead door track, and only after that did we help him rough out where the workbench and parts washer would go.

Post spacing and overhead clearance both matter more than people expect, especially with a lifted truck that already sits taller than a stock vehicle. We measured cab height with the lift extended to make sure there was room to run the vehicle up without clipping anything overhead, and we set post placement so the doors could open fully without hitting the arms. Getting this sequence right the first time saved him from having to move a compressor line or reroute conduit later, which is a common headache when the lift gets installed as an afterthought instead of the anchor point for the whole layout.

Choosing the Right Capacity for a Lifted, Loaded Truck

A lot of guys underestimate how much a built overland rig actually weighs once you add a winch bumper, roof rack, rooftop tent, drawers, recovery gear, and a full tank of fuel and water. We walked through his actual loaded weight rather than the sticker curb weight, because that’s the number that matters for choosing lift capacity. Undersizing a 2 post car lift for a heavily accessorized truck is one of the most common mistakes we see, and it’s not something you want to find out the hard way with a truck sitting six feet in the air.

We landed on a capacity with real headroom above his loaded weight, which also gives him room to grow if he adds more gear later. What the Actual Install Day Looked Like

Delivery and install went the way most of our garage jobs go when the prep work is done right: truck backed up to the bay, columns and crossmember unloaded, anchors set into the pre-marked pattern, and the lift squared and leveled before we ran power to it. Because he’d left the layout open and hadn’t tried to cram other equipment in first, there was nothing to work around. We ran the hydraulic lines, checked cable or chain synchronization depending on the lift’s configuration, and cycled it empty several times before ever putting his truck on it.

We always tell customers the first cycle with a vehicle on board should be slow and deliberate, watching that both sides rise evenly and the safety locks engage properly at each notch. On this job everything synced correctly the first time, which isn’t guaranteed on every install — sometimes a column needs a small adjustment to true it up, and that’s a normal part of commissioning a new lift, not a defect. Getting it right at commissioning is what prevents the kind of secondary-lock or unevenness complaints we occasionally get called out to fix on lifts installed by someone else.

Doing the Wheel Bearing Job Once the Lift Was In

Once the lift was operational, the actual bearing service was almost anticlimactic compared to the years he’d spent doing it on stands. With the truck up and both front wheels hanging free, he had full access to both hub assemblies at once, could rotate the wheel by hand to check for play before tearing in, and had a clean, well-lit workspace to press the new bearings home. That’s the real payoff of a 2 post car lift for this kind of work — it’s not just about convenience, it’s about doing the job correctly with proper access instead of rushing because your back hurts.

We hear the same thing from a lot of builders once they’ve had a lift in the shop for a few months: they end up doing more of their own maintenance because it’s no longer a dreaded chore. Wheel bearings, brake work, driveline inspections, even skid plate and armor installs get easier and more frequent once the vehicle is at a comfortable working height. That’s part of why we push people to think about lift placement early in a build-out instead of treating it as a nice-to-have they’ll add later.

Lessons for Anyone Planning a Similar Garage Build-Out

If you’re in the early stages of a shop build in Iowa and thinking about a 2 post car lift, the biggest lesson from this job is to sequence the lift first and let the rest of the layout follow it. Confirm your concrete cure time, check ceiling height with your tallest vehicle in mind, and be honest about loaded weight rather than curb weight when picking a capacity. Those three things alone prevent most of the headaches we see on other installs.
