A 2 post car lift is the backbone of any dealership service department doing volume wheel bearing work, but we get the same call constantly from service managers across western Illinois: the lift they want won’t fit the bay they have. Between low ceiling trusses in older buildings and overhead doors that clip the top of a raised arm, clearance mistakes are the number one reason a lift install gets delayed or downgraded after the fact. Why Wheel Bearing Service Drives the Height Conversation

Wheel bearing replacement isn’t like an oil change. Techs need the wheel off, the hub exposed, and in a lot of cases the strut or control arm loose enough to swing the knuckle out of the way. That means the vehicle needs to go higher than a typical brake job, and on trucks and SUVs with factory lift kits or aftermarket wheels, the stack height from tire to roof of cab is already tall before the vehicle leaves the ground. When a service manager tells us they’re doing a lot of bearing work on half-ton pickups and mid-size SUVs, we immediately ask about the building’s clear height, not just the lift’s rated lifting height.

Most full-rise two post lifts top out with the vehicle somewhere between 68 and 72 inches off the floor at full extension, and the arms and carriage assembly add more above that. A dealership running a mixed fleet of sedans and trucks through wheel bearing service needs enough overhead room that a tech can walk under a raised truck without ducking, and enough that the lift’s own superstructure doesn’t kiss the ceiling first. We’ve walked into more than one western Illinois shop where the previous lift was chosen off a spec sheet without anyone climbing a ladder to measure the actual trusses.

Reading Your Ceiling Height Before You Order a 2 Post Car Lift

The number we ask for first on every quote for a 2 post car lift is clear height from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction directly above where the lift will sit. That’s not the height at the peak of a roof truss ten feet to the side. It’s the lowest point in the actual working envelope: sprinkler heads, HVAC ductwork, light fixtures, and structural crossmembers all count. In a lot of older dealership service bays built decades ago, that number is lower than the building’s general ceiling height because of retrofit ductwork or lighting added over the years.

For a standard 10,000 to 12,000 lb capacity lift, we generally want 13 to 14 feet of clear height to run the lift at full rise without restriction, though shorter overhead columns and specific carriage designs can work in bays with less. If your building has 12 feet or less, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck, it just means we need to talk about a low-overhead-clearance lift design or plan on limiting travel with an adjustable stop. We’d rather have that conversation with your facilities team before delivery than have a tech find out the hard way with a truck stuck six inches from the ceiling.

Door Swing and Drive-Thru Layout Considerations

Ceiling height gets all the attention, but door swing is just as often the reason a two post lift ends up in the wrong spot. If the lift is going in near an overhead door, the columns need enough clearance that the door track and springs aren’t in the way when it’s fully open, and the vehicle needs a straight, unobstructed shot in and out without clipping a column on the way through. We’ve measured bays in western Illinois dealerships where the previous layout had techs threading a truck in at an angle just to clear a support column, which slows down every single wheel bearing job that comes through that bay.

We also look at swing radius for the arms themselves. Rotary and Challenger two post lifts need room for the arms to sweep out from under the vehicle without hitting a wall, a tool cart, or the next bay’s lift columns. In a shared drive-thru bay design, that arm swing on both sides needs to clear without the two lifts interfering with each other when both are loaded. This is where a site visit pays for itself: a tape measure and a set of manufacturer drawings tell us in twenty minutes whether your layout works as-is or needs the columns shifted a foot in either direction.

Capacity Choices for Dealership Wheel Bearing Volume

Most dealership service departments running a steady diet of wheel bearing work land on either an 8,000 lb or 10,000 lb capacity two post lift, sometimes stepping up to 12,000 lb if the mix includes heavier trucks or fleet vehicles. We’ve quoted Ford and Chevy stores on both ends of that range depending on what’s rolling through the door, and the honest answer is that capacity should match your actual vehicle mix, not just what the last shop down the road bought. A 10,000 lb rated lift gives real margin on a loaded three-quarter-ton truck with a service body, where an 8,000 lb unit might be cutting it closer than a service manager wants to think about.

We also talk through symmetric versus asymmetric column and arm designs at this stage, because wheel bearing work on trucks with dual rear wheels or extended cabs benefits from the extra swing-out room an asymmetric setup gives a technician working the front end. It’s a smaller decision than ceiling height, but it affects how comfortably a tech can work a strut or knuckle loose without the arm being in the way the whole time.

Concrete, Anchoring, and Pit-Free Installation

A two post lift asks a lot of the slab underneath it. Before we schedule install, we ask about the concrete’s thickness and cure date, because anchoring a lift rated for heavy dealership volume into thin or old, cracked concrete is asking for a callback down the road. Most surface-mount two post lifts want at least 4 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete, and if your bay has a floor drain, in-floor lube pit, or old anchor holes from a previous lift, that changes where the columns can actually go.

We don’t require a pit for a standard 2 post car lift, which is one reason dealerships prefer it over inground alternatives, but we do want photos or a site visit before delivery so we’re not discovering a rebar mat or an unexpected utility line the morning of install. What a Freight and Install Day Actually Looks Like

By the time we’re delivering to a dealership in western Illinois, we’ve already confirmed dock access, whether the shop has a forklift on site to help unload columns and crossmembers, and whether the drive is clear enough for a straight truck or if we’re dealing with tighter city access. A typical two post install runs one to two days depending on electrical work needed for the power unit, and we coordinate an electrician if your bay doesn’t already have a drop in the right spot.

We also walk the service manager through the initial calibration and safety lock testing before we call the job done, because a lift that’s mechanically installed but not properly adjusted for arm restraints and safety latches isn’t ready for a tech to run a truck up on it. This is also when we confirm the exact overhead clearance in practice, not just on paper, running the lift to full rise with a tall vehicle before we sign off.

Maintenance That Keeps Wheel Bearing Jobs Moving

Once it’s running, the lift that sees the most cycles per day is the one that needs the most consistent attention. Cable lifts need periodic cable and pulley inspection, hydraulic cylinder lifts need fluid checks and seal inspection, and every two post lift needs its safety locks and arm restraints checked on a schedule regardless of drive type. Shops running heavy wheel bearing volume put more cycles on a lift in a month than a typical independent shop does in six, and that adds up on wear parts faster than most service managers expect.
