Step One: Sizing the 2 Post Car Lift to the Transmission Work
Transmission service on medium and heavy trucks is different from general repair, and it changes what you need from a 2 post car lift. A tech dropping a transmission needs full access underneath with the drivetrain hanging, which means a symmetric or wide-clearance configuration usually works better than the asymmetric arm layout you’d pick for a general alignment or brake bay. Weight capacity has to account for the truck plus any imbalance from a transmission jack being used simultaneously — we don’t recommend running a heavy-duty pickup or box truck on anything under a 10,000 to 12,000 lb rated lift if transmission drops are the daily job.
For the Davenport shop, we walked through his heaviest regular vehicle first, then backed into a capacity that had margin, not just enough. Overhead height mattered too — his bay had a lower ceiling than his other stalls, so we looked at a shorter overall height model instead of an extended-height unit, which also affected which brand and model fit. Step Two: Concrete and Floor Readiness
Before we ever schedule an install crew, we ask about the floor. We ask for slab age, thickness if known, and whether there’s any existing damage near where the columns will land.

Step Four: Freight, Delivery, and What Happens When the Lift Arrives
A 2 post car lift ships on a pallet or in a crate depending on the manufacturer, and it’s heavy — columns alone can run several hundred pounds each. Before we schedule delivery we always ask the same questions we ask everyone: is there a forklift or skid loader on site, is the bay accessible by a delivery truck, and is there someone available to receive freight and check it against the packing list. A shop that already runs heavy trucks usually has the equipment to unload, which simplifies this step considerably compared to a smaller garage.
We also flag lead times honestly. Certain configurations and extended-height models take longer to build than standard units, and that lead time needs to be baked into a shop’s scheduling from day one — not discovered the week they wanted the bay done. Getting an accurate freight and lead-time picture up front is part of what separates a smooth build-out from one where the transmission bay sits half-finished for a month.
Step Five: Professional Installation
