Start With the Slab, Not the Lift Catalog

Every fleet manager wants to talk lift specs first, and we get it — you’ve got a budget cycle and a purchase order to justify. But the honest first step in any garage build-out is confirming the slab. A 2 post car lift rated for 10,000 lbs or more needs a specific concrete thickness and cure time, and anchor pull tests matter more than what’s written on the architectural drawings. We’ve seen plenty of eastern Nebraska shops pour a slab to general commercial spec, only to find out during anchor testing that it won’t hold the lift’s rated capacity without additional pad work.

If your garage is still in the design phase, get us the vehicle mix — plow trucks, one-ton pickups, patrol cars — before the concrete crew shows up. Municipal fleets aren’t lifting sedans. You’ve got service trucks with ladder racks, light bars, and sometimes plow frames still attached in shoulder seasons. A 2 post car lift raises the vehicle well above head height, and if your building was designed around passenger car dimensions, you may find your tallest units can’t reach full lift height without clipping overhead ductwork, lighting, or door track hardware.

Before you finalize bay layout, measure your tallest vehicle with all accessories in the raised, working position — not just the vehicle roofline. We’ve walked into more than one new garage build where electrical was roughed in before the lift order was finalized, and the conduit ended up in the wrong spot relative to the power unit location. A 2 post car lift needs a dedicated circuit sized to the power unit’s motor, plus air line drops if you’re running pneumatic release on the locks. Get the exact lift model specified before your electrician pulls permits, not after.

Bay Spacing and Drive-Through Clearance

Fleet garages often need drive-through capability so a truck can pull straight through instead of backing out past other bays. Column placement for a 2 post car lift has to account for mirror width, door swing, and enough clearance on both sides for a technician to move around the vehicle safely while it’s in the air. We size bay width based on your widest fleet vehicle, not an average — averages are how shops end up with lifts too close to a support column.

We also look at approach angles. A patrol car and a one-ton pickup have very different ground clearance and wheelbase, and if your garage services both, the lift’s arm reach and drive-through path need to accommodate the widest range without constant repositioning. Getting this measured correctly during the build-out phase means fewer surprises when the first plow truck rolls in for its annual inspection.

Sequencing Delivery, Forklift Access, and Installation Day

Freight logistics matter more in a fleet garage build-out than most people expect. A 2 post car lift ships heavy, usually on a flatbed, and unloading it without a forklift on site or a loading dock creates real delays. We ask every fleet customer the same questions we ask independent shops: is there a forklift on site, is there a pit or dock for unloading, and is the delivery driveway rated for a semi. Rushing that sequence is how a lift ends up sitting in a corner for three weeks waiting on an inspector’s sign-off on the slab.

What State Inspectors Actually Check

Annual state inspections on a 2 post car lift look at anchor bolt torque, cable and equalizer condition, lock engagement on both arms, hydraulic hose condition, and overall structural wear at the base plates. Fleet garages that run lifts hard, year-round, in freeze-thaw climates like eastern Nebraska tend to see faster wear on equalizer cables and lock mechanisms than a typical independent shop bay. We recommend fleet managers build a quarterly self-check into their maintenance schedule so the annual inspection isn’t the first time anyone’s looked closely at cable fray or lock ladder wear.
