Why Sequencing Matters More Than the Lift Brand
Most people building a new bay think the hard decision is Rotary versus Challenger versus something off Amazon for two grand. It isn’t. The hard decision is figuring out anchor bolt locations, overhead clearance, and door swing before the slab gets poured or before you commit to where the compressor and welder outlets go. We’ve walked into more than one shop where the concrete was already down and the owner wanted a 2 post car lift installed in a spot that didn’t have enough slab depth or was six inches too close to a support column.
For a restoration and metal work bay specifically, sequencing gets even more important because you’re not just parking cars — you’re swinging a car body around on the lift, running a plasma table nearby, and sometimes rolling a frame jig underneath. We tell fabrication customers to lock in lift placement first, then build the rest of the shop layout around it, not the other way around. Get that wrong and you end up with a lift that works fine mechanically but fights you every day on usable floor space.
Concrete and Anchor Requirements for a 2 Post Car Lift
Every 2 post car lift needs a specific slab thickness and cure time before we can anchor it, and this trips up more new-shop builds than anything else. If the concrete is too thin or too green, the anchors won’t hold to spec and the lift isn’t safe to certify. We ask upfront: is this new construction or an existing slab? This is also where brand matters for the long run. We carry and install anything ALI certified — Rotary, Challenger, Atlas, BendPak — but for a working restoration shop that plans to run the lift hard for a decade or more, we lean toward Rotary and Challenger because replacement parts are the easiest to source quickly. BendPak is well marketed and solid equipment, but parts can take a little longer to track down. The lifts people regret are almost always the cheap imported units where nobody stocks the parts at all.
Clearance for Bodywork, Frame Swings, and Overhead Cranes
Restoration and metal work bays need more overhead and swing clearance than a typical tire shop. If you’re lifting a body off a frame or rotating a shell for panel work, you need to know your ceiling height, any overhead crane or hoist track, and how far the arms extend before you finalize where the 2 post car lift sits in the bay. We had to check the roof trusses and existing lighting layout on this project before confirming final position, because a metal shop often has more overhead obstructions than a standard service bay.
Door height and swing also matter more here than people expect. Two Post vs Four Post for a Fabrication Bay
Customers building a restoration shop often ask us whether a four post drive-on makes more sense than a two post for metal work. The honest answer depends on what you’re doing underneath. A 2 post car lift gives you open access to the whole underside of the vehicle — critical if you’re doing frame repair, floor pan replacement, or rocker panel work where you need hands and tools everywhere. A four post is better for alignment work or long-term storage but blocks access to the frame rails with its runways.
For this Quad Cities build, the fabricator went with an asymmetric two post arrangement because it let him swing car doors open fully without hitting the posts, and it gave full underbody access for the sheet metal and frame work that makes up most of his business. If your shop’s bread and butter is metal work rather than tire and brake service, a two post arrangement is almost always the better call for the primary bay, with a four post reserved for storage or alignment if you have room for a second lift down the road.
Forklift, Freight, and Delivery Logistics
Getting a 2 post car lift from the truck into a new shop is its own logistics puzzle, and it’s one we ask about on every quote call. Do you have a forklift on site? Is there a loading dock or just a gravel lot? For shops still under construction, sometimes the only equipment on hand is a tractor with forks, which works but takes more careful coordination on our end. We’ve installed lifts at sites where the only lifting equipment available was borrowed from a neighboring farm operation, and it worked out fine because we planned for it ahead of time.
Lead time is the other piece people underestimate. Between ordering the specific model, scheduling our crew, and coordinating around your construction timeline, you’re usually looking at a few weeks minimum, longer if the shop isn’t ready for us yet. We’d rather push an install date back a week than show up to a bay with no power run to the lift location or concrete that hasn’t cured long enough. Getting the Hydraulics and Controls Right From Day One
A new shop build is also the right time to think through hydraulic setup and control placement, not just where the posts sit. We route power and control boxes based on how the operator will actually stand and work, which matters more in a fabrication bay where you might be running the lift controls with welding gloves on or with a body cart parked nearby. Equalizer cables, footpads, and lock releases all need to be reachable without reaching over or around other shop equipment.
We also talk through footpad style at this stage — rectangle bolt-on pads are common on Rotary and Challenger two-post models, and getting the right style ordered with the initial installation saves a service call later.
