Their grandfather ran a repair garage out of a two-bay building decades ago, their dad added onto it, and now the grandson wanted a proper home garage bay for storing the family’s collector trucks and a couple of daily drivers through the winter. The problem was he wanted to pour concrete, run electrical, and frame the ceiling before calling us, which is backwards. Why Sequencing Comes Before Concrete

We get calls every week from Iowa homeowners and small shop owners who already poured a slab and are now asking us to make a 2 post car lift fit into a space that wasn’t planned around it. That’s the wrong order. Before concrete goes down, we need post spacing, overall width, and ceiling height locked in, because those numbers drive where the control joints get cut, where the 220V circuit gets run, and how thick the pad needs to be at the anchor points. A typical 10,000 lb two post lift needs somewhere around 10 to 12 feet of clear width between posts depending on the model, plus another few feet on each side for door swing and vehicle clearance.

For this West Des Moines family, we walked them through post spacing, runway length, and overhead height requirements weeks before their contractor showed up. That let them cut control joints away from the anchor bolt pattern and rough in the electrical conduit in the right spot instead of chasing it later with surface-mount conduit. We also flagged ceiling height early, since a two post lift with a raised vehicle and an SUV on it can need well over 12 feet of clearance, which matters if there are ceiling joists, garage door tracks, or LED fixtures planned overhead.

Getting the Dimensions Right for a Two-Bay Garage

Every 2 post car lift has three dimensions that actually matter for layout: overall width, distance between posts, and drive-through clearance if it’s an asymmetric arm design. We always send full spec sheets and manuals before a customer commits to a floor plan, because guessing at these numbers from memory or a brochure photo is how garages end up with a post six inches from a wall stud. For a two-car garage bay running side by side, you generally want at least 12 feet of width per lift plus 3 feet of walking clearance between the lift and any adjacent equipment or wall.

We also talk through minimum distance from the post to the front and side walls, because that number drives where the slab thickens up and where the anchor bolts land relative to any rebar mat. If there’s no pit and it’s a straight surface-mount installation, the concrete needs to be a specific minimum thickness and PSI rating at the anchor pattern, not just wherever the contractor happened to pour it thickest. Getting this dimension conversation done before the pour saved this family from having to core-drill new anchor locations after the fact, which is a repair job nobody wants to schedule.

Seasonal Storage Changes the Layout Math

This particular install wasn’t for daily repair work — it was for seasonal vehicle storage. The family wanted to run a two post lift year-round to stack a truck or classic car above a daily driver through the winter months when garage space in central Iowa gets tight. That changes the layout math a little, because a vehicle sitting elevated for weeks or months needs stable arm positioning and a locking mechanism you trust, not just enough lift capacity to get it in the air for an oil change.

We recommended sizing up slightly beyond what their heaviest vehicle technically required, since a lift that’s comfortably rated above the load handles long-duration storage with more margin than one running near its ceiling. We also talked about runway length and how far forward the vehicle needs to sit so the elevated tires clear the garage door track when it’s closed for the season. None of that shows up on a basic capacity chart, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that turns into a phone call to us in February when someone realizes their stored truck is two inches too tall to close the door.

Electrical and Air Requirements Nobody Plans For

Most two post lifts run on a standard 220V single-phase circuit, and the air requirement is modest compared to what people expect. We’ve had customers assume they need a massive dedicated compressor setup, when in reality a smaller unit handles the air release just fine. The bigger planning issue is where that 220V line lands relative to the lift’s power unit, because running conduit after the walls are finished means surface-mount runs that look like an afterthought.

For this family’s build-out, we specified the electrical drop location before the electrician ever showed up, tying it to the confirmed post spacing so the outlet landed exactly where the power unit would sit. We also discussed whether they wanted the standard steel ramps or removable aluminum ramps, since the aluminum versions are easier to pull off if they’re getting the top vehicle down and back frequently, while the standard ramps make more sense if the top spot is truly long-term seasonal storage and rarely moves.

Concrete Specs That Actually Hold a 2 Post Car Lift

We can’t stress this enough: the concrete under a 2 post car lift has to meet a minimum thickness and cure strength, and it has to be free of control joints or expansion joints running through the anchor bolt pattern. We see this go wrong constantly — a contractor pours a beautiful slab, but the expansion joint runs directly under where the post needs to sit, and now we’re either relocating the lift or drilling into a joint that won’t hold anchors reliably long-term.

Before this West Des Moines job broke ground, we gave the contractor a marked-up layout showing exactly where the joints needed to avoid the post footprint. That one conversation, done ahead of the pour instead of after, is the single biggest thing that separates a smooth two post lift installation from a service call six months later where we’re troubleshooting anchor movement or concrete cracking around the base plates.

Ceiling Height, Overhead Obstructions, and Lighting

Overhead clearance trips up more garage builds than any other dimension. A 2 post car lift raises a vehicle well above head height, and if there’s a garage door header, ceiling joist, or HVAC duct in the wrong spot, the lift simply won’t reach full travel without hitting something. We always ask about finished ceiling height, not rough framing height, because drywall, insulation, and any LED fixture housings all eat into that clearance.

This family wanted slim LED fixtures mounted above the lift bay, which is a great look but needs to be planned around the lift’s maximum height, not bolted in wherever looks even. We coordinated the fixture height with the lift’s overall vertical travel so nothing gets clipped when a taller truck is raised to full height. It’s a small detail, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that turns a good-looking garage into a genuinely functional one.

Choosing Between Symmetric and Asymmetric Arm Configurations

Two post lifts generally come in symmetric or asymmetric arm configurations, and the choice affects both the layout and how the space gets used day to day. Symmetric arms center the vehicle evenly between the posts, which some owners prefer for balance and simplicity. Asymmetric arms shift the vehicle’s weight forward, opening up a wider walk-through path behind the posts, which matters if the garage bay doubles as a workspace or storage area when the lift isn’t loaded.

For a seasonal storage setup like this one, we usually lean toward asymmetric arms because the extra walk-through clearance makes it easier to move around a vehicle parked underneath for months at a time. We also discussed drive-through clearance for anyone who might want to pull a second vehicle past the lift posts without having to reposition anything. None of these decisions are complicated on their own, but stacked together they’re exactly why we push customers to finalize the lift model and arm configuration before the framing crew shows up, not after.
