A 2 post car lift changes the order you build out a garage, especially when you’re an overlanding guy who’s constantly under the truck for oil pan gaskets, skid plate clearance, and driveline work. We got a call last month from a builder near Ames putting together a home shop for a lifted diesel project, and the whole conversation was really about sequencing: what goes in the concrete first, what gets bolted down second, and where the lift needs to sit so a 20-plus foot rig with a roof rack still clears the ceiling. Most first-time garage builders want to plan storage, workbenches, and tool chests before they think about the lift. We tell people to flip that order. A 2 post car lift needs a defined footprint, a specific concrete thickness, and clearance on both sides for the arms to swing under a lifted truck with aftermarket bumpers and rock sliders. If you build your storage wall first and then try to shoehorn the lift in, you’ll end up with a column too close to a workbench or not enough swing-arm clearance to get under a long-wheelbase 3/4-ton diesel.
In the Ames case, the builder was already planning a fairly deep bay for a truck plus a full-size trailer, so we walked the space before any drywall or shelving went in. That’s the right order: slab, lift, power, then everything else gets built around it. We see this same mistake with hobby shops all over central Iowa — people frame out a beautiful shop and then call us asking if there’s any way to fit a two-post between two posts that are eighteen inches too close together. Sequencing the lift first saves that headache entirely.
Concrete Thickness and Anchoring for Heavier Off-Road Rigs
Off-road and overlanding builds are heavier than stock trucks. Once you add a winch bumper, long-range fuel tank, roof-top tent, and drawer system, a half-ton can push close to the capacity ceiling of an 9,000 lb 2 post car lift. We generally steer these builders toward a 10,000 lb or higher capacity column setup, and we always ask about concrete before anything else. Four to six inches of properly cured slab is the baseline we look for, and in a lot of older Iowa garages that’s exactly what’s missing.
We’ve had customers with 5-inch concrete pour additional pads specifically for the anchor bolts, and we’ve had others where the existing slab was more than adequate once we confirmed cure time and rebar placement. For a build like the Ames overlanding project, we ran the numbers on lift weight plus vehicle weight plus a comfortable margin, then confirmed anchor spacing against the slab spec before ordering equipment. Skipping that step is how you end up with a lift that works fine for six months and then starts working loose at the base plates under repeated heavy-truck loading.
Ceiling Height, Bar-Style Columns, and Roof Rack Clearance
A lot of overlanding builds carry a roof rack, tent, or ladder that adds another foot or more to total vehicle height, and that changes the math on ceiling clearance. We’ve installed 2 post car lift setups in shops with anywhere from 12-foot ceilings up to buildings with 21 feet of overhead room, and the bar-across-the-top column style versus an overhead-bar-free design matters a lot here. If you’re running a roof rack and a tent, a lift with a low overhead bar can literally stop you from raising the vehicle all the way up.
For the Ames build, we specifically discussed whether the customer wanted a bar-across-the-top configuration or a setup without that overhead bar, given the height of his rig with accessories mounted. We also talked through mounting height for the arms so a lifted truck with larger tires doesn’t bottom out the pads before the frame contact points are reachable. This is a detail that gets missed constantly — people order based on weight capacity alone and forget that an overlanding rig’s actual working height under the lift is taller than a stock truck by a meaningful margin.
Sequencing Oil Pan Gasket Jobs Around the Lift Install
Oil pan gasket work is one of the most common reasons overlanding and off-road guys want a 2 post car lift in the first place. Skid plates, transfer cases, and aftermarket exhaust routing make oil pan gasket jobs miserable on jack stands, and a two-post gives you full access from underneath with the wheels hanging free. In the case we’re describing, the builder wanted the lift operational before he tackled a pan gasket replacement on his own rig, so we prioritized getting the lift installed and load-tested before he scheduled that repair.
We generally tell customers to plan the first few jobs they’ll run on a new lift, because it helps us confirm arm configuration and pad placement during final setup. An oil pan gasket job needs good clearance around the pan and easy swing-arm positioning that doesn’t interfere with skid plate removal. We walked through that with the Ames customer during install so the arms were positioned correctly from day one instead of him fighting the equipment on his first job under the truck.
Power, Wiring, and What’s Included in an Install Quote
One thing that catches new garage builders off guard is that a lift installation quote often does not include electrical wiring. We’ve had jobs where the lift itself is already on site and the ballpark install cost is straightforward, but running power to the unit is a separate scope entirely, especially in older garages without existing 220V circuits nearby. If you’re sequencing a build-out, get an electrician lined up in parallel with the lift installation so you’re not waiting weeks between having a bolted-down lift and actually being able to run it.
We typically give customers a realistic timeline — often in the range of about a week for the physical installation once equipment is on site — but that clock doesn’t include permitting or wiring in most cases. For the Ames project, we coordinated so the concrete, lift installation, and electrical work overlapped rather than stacked end to end, which shaved real time off the overall build-out schedule.
Choosing Between a Two-Post and a Double-Wide Setup for Multiple Vehicles
Overlanding builders often own more than one project vehicle, and we get asked constantly whether it makes sense to go with a double-wide or dual-column configuration instead of a single 2 post car lift. The honest answer depends on total combined vehicle weight. If you’re planning to eventually lift two heavy trucks side by side, you need to verify the combined capacity rating rather than assuming a standard double configuration covers it — we’ve talked builders out of doubling up when their combined vehicle weight exceeded what a shared-capacity setup could safely handle.
For most single-vehicle overlanding shops, though, a properly sized 2 post car lift with mobile or fixed columns covers the job without the added cost and footprint of a double setup. We walk through capacity math with every customer before they commit, because guessing on capacity is the single most expensive mistake we see in home garage builds.
