You’ve got two columns, an overhead cross-beam or cable-carrying assembly on some models, two carriages, and a hydraulic power unit crate. Total shipping weight usually lands between 2,200 and 3,000 lbs depending on the model and whether it’s an asymmetric or symmetric arm design. That’s not something two guys wrestle off a truck by hand.

The columns themselves run 11 to 13 feet long on a typical two-post unit rated for full-size trucks, since you need enough overhead height to lift a raised 4×4 with the arms fully extended. That length matters for freight class and truck type — a straight box truck with a liftgate can’t always accommodate a column that long without diagonal loading, which is why we always ask freight carriers about trailer length before the lift ships, not after it’s already on a truck headed for central Iowa.

Why Forklift Access Changes the Whole Install Timeline

Every quote we send asks the same question: is there a forklift on site? It sounds like a small detail, but it changes everything about install day. If a shop has its own forklift or a loading dock with a lift gate, we can schedule a tighter window because unloading and staging happen fast. If there’s no forklift, we either need to bring our own equipment on the truck or coordinate a rental, and that adds real time and cost to the job that a lot of shops don’t budget for upfront.

For this Ankeny-area transmission shop, the building had a single overhead door about 10 feet wide and no dock — common for a shop built decades ago before anyone anticipated moving 2,500 lb crates through the bay. We had to plan the delivery for a pallet jack and engine hoist combination instead of a forklift, staging the column crates just inside the door and walking them into position with rollers. It took longer than a forklift drop, but it worked because we scoped it out before the truck ever left the supplier’s dock, not after it showed up and everyone stood around scratching their heads.

Concrete and Floor Readiness Before the Lift Arrives

Freight and forklift access only matter if the floor underneath is ready to receive the lift once it’s unloaded. A 2 post car lift needs a minimum concrete thickness — generally 4 to 4.5 inches of unreinforced, properly cured concrete rated at 3,000 PSI or better — under each column’s footprint, with no expansion joints or old anchor holes cutting through the bolt pattern. Shops with additions, patched sections, or floors poured in stages over the decades often have a weak spot right where the columns need to sit.

We core-tested the slab at this transmission shop before freight even shipped, because the building had gone through at least two additions since the grandfather first opened it. That kind of history is common in older Iowa shops, and it’s exactly why we don’t schedule delivery until we’ve confirmed the floor can handle it. Nobody wants a lift crate sitting on a trailer for two extra weeks because the concrete needs to be re-poured after the fact — better to find that out with a test kit and a tape measure than after the crates are already parked in the shop.

Column Spacing and Drive-Through Clearance for Transmission Work

Transmission service has its own geometry requirements that general repair work doesn’t. You need enough width between the columns — usually 10 to 12 feet depending on the model — to comfortably swing a transmission jack under the vehicle once it’s raised, plus clearance on both sides to walk around with tools. Overhead clearance matters too, since raising a full-size pickup or van to working height for a transmission drop needs more vertical room than a sedan oil change.

We measured this shop’s bay at just over 24 feet deep and 14 feet wide, which gave us room for the columns plus a comfortable buffer for the transmission jack to roll in from either side. Ceiling height cleared 13 feet, enough for full-extension lifts on their tallest trucks without the carriage arms grazing anything overhead. Getting these numbers wrong on paper is the single most common reason a 2 post car lift install gets delayed after delivery — the crates arrive, and then someone realizes the columns don’t actually fit the way the sales quote assumed.

Staging the Lift Once It’s Off the Truck

Once freight lands and the crates are unloaded, there’s still a staging sequence before installation crews can start anchoring anything. Columns get uncrated and laid out roughly where they’ll stand, hydraulic lines and cable runs get checked against the packing manifest, and the power unit gets positioned where it’ll actually be plumbed in. Skipping this staging step and just diving into anchoring is how installers end up moving a fully-bolted column six inches because a cable routing conflict wasn’t caught early.

For the Ankeny shop, we staged everything along one wall for a full day before touching a hammer drill, checking bolt patterns against the floor plan we’d already surveyed. That patience paid off — the actual anchoring and hydraulic hookup took less than a day once we started, because nothing was a surprise. Capacity matters too — a shop pulling transmissions out of diesel trucks and heavy-duty vans should be looking at 12,000 lb rated units minimum, not the 9,000 lb lifts sized for passenger cars.
