A small fleet operator running a handful of pickups and vans out of a Cedar Falls shop called us with a familiar problem: shocks and suspension work was eating up bay time because everything was still happening on jack stands. He wanted a 2 post car lift that could get a truck up to full arm’s reach, hold it steady while a tech wrestled with a seized strut, and not tie up the whole bay doing it. What he didn’t expect was how much the answer depended on his concrete, his ceiling height, and how his bays were laid out. We walked his shop the same week and ended up comparing two very different setups side by side before landing on the right one.

Why Suspension and Shock Work Changes the Equation

Suspension and shock replacement is different from an oil change or a tire rotation. Techs need the vehicle up high enough to work overhead comfortably, the wheels hanging free so the suspension can travel, and the lift arms out of the way of control arms, sway bars, and shock towers. For a small fleet running mixed trucks and vans, that usually means an asymmetrical 2 post car lift with adjustable arms rather than a fixed-arm setup, because the arm geometry has to clear different frame points depending on which vehicle is up.

We’ve had fleet customers ask for a 9,000 lb lift and then realize once they see the options that an 11,000 lb capacity model fits the same budget and covers heavier trucks down the road. That’s the conversation we had in Cedar Falls too. His fleet wasn’t huge, but it included a one-ton pickup, so we sized the lift for the heaviest vehicle he’d ever put on it, not the average one. Undersizing a 2 post car lift for suspension work is one of the more common mistakes we see, because the loads on the arms shift more during shock and strut removal than during routine lift-and-inspect work.

Setup One: Single Bay, Standard Height

The first configuration we walked through was a single-bay install using his existing 12-foot ceiling. A standard-height 2 post car lift works fine here, but it caps how tall a vehicle can be raised before the top of the vehicle or the lift arms get close to overhead obstructions, and it limits how much clearance a tech has underneath for suspension work on taller trucks. At 12 feet, most 10,000 lb capacity lifts fit without issue, but there’s not a lot of room to spare, and any HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, or overhead doors have to be checked before we finalize anything.

This setup made sense for his lower-volume bay, where one or two vehicles a day might need suspension work and speed mattered more than headroom. The tradeoff is that a tech working a full brake and shock job under a standard-height lift sometimes has to duck a bit near the top of the vehicle. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s worth knowing before the concrete work starts, because raising the ceiling later isn’t an option — the anchor bolts and post height are locked in at install.

Setup Two: Dedicated Bay, Taller Ceiling, Room to Move

His second bay had 16-foot ceilings and more open floor space, which changed the conversation entirely. With that kind of clearance, we could spec a 2 post car lift with a higher travel range, giving techs full standing room under a raised truck for shock tower access and suspension component swaps. This bay also had enough width that we didn’t have to worry about door swing or adjacent equipment interfering with the arms at full extension.

We recommended this be the fleet’s dedicated suspension and undercarriage bay going forward, with the standard-height lift in the other bay handling quicker in-and-out jobs like tire work and fluid changes. Running two 2 post car lift units instead of one lets a small fleet triage work by job type instead of by whichever bay happens to be open, which is exactly the kind of scheduling problem this operator was trying to solve when he first called.

The Site Survey: What We Actually Check

Before we quote or schedule any 2 post car lift install, we walk the site in person or get detailed photos and measurements if distance doesn’t allow it. Ceiling height is first — 12 feet is workable for standard lifts, but anything under that pushes us toward low-rise or mid-rise options, and those come with a real tradeoff: a tech won’t be able to stand up fully underneath the vehicle. We also check concrete thickness and condition, since anchor bolts need solid, uncracked slab to hold under load, and older shop floors sometimes need reinforcement or a different anchor pattern.

We ask about floor drains, in-floor heat lines, and rebar placement too, because none of those show up until someone’s drilling anchor holes. And we always ask about site logistics: is there a forklift or pallet jack on site, is there a loading dock, how far is the unload point from the install bay. Fleet operators moving heavy lift components around a working shop need to plan around existing equipment and daily traffic, and that’s easier to sort out before delivery day than during it.

Controls, Arms, and Airline Routing

One detail that trips up a lot of first-time buyers is control placement. The control post on most 2 post car lift models can go on either the front driver’s side or rear passenger’s side — it’s not a fixed requirement, it’s mostly a matter of shop layout and where the tech will stand most often. For fleet work where the same two or three techs run the same routine, we talk through where they naturally stand during suspension jobs and place controls there.

Air line routing matters too, especially in a shop laying out multiple lifts in the same run. We’ve installed pairs of 2 post car lift units where the customer wanted the air lines run to the lifts but handled the shop-side layout themselves, which works fine as long as it’s coordinated ahead of the install date. Getting the electrical and air supply sorted before the lift arrives saves a full day of standing around waiting on another contractor.

Anchor Bolts and Concrete: The Part Nobody Wants to Talk About

We mentioned it above, but it deserves its own section because it’s the single biggest reason installs get delayed. A 2 post car lift depends entirely on the concrete it’s bolted to. Four-inch slabs can work for lighter-duty lifts in some cases, but for heavier capacity units handling one-ton trucks, we want to see thicker, well-cured concrete without heavy cracking near the anchor points. If a shop is planning new concrete anyway — which happens more than you’d think when someone’s setting up a new bay — we always recommend getting the lift’s anchor bolt pattern and pad thickness requirements before the pour, not after.

We’ve had customers tell us they’re not sure about rebar placement because the pour hasn’t happened yet, and that’s exactly the right time to loop us in. Getting the bolt pattern locked in before concrete goes down means zero surprises on install day, and it means the 2 post car lift goes in on schedule instead of getting pushed a week while someone core-drills around unexpected rebar.
