A 2 post car lift only performs as well as the floor holding its anchor bolts, and that’s doubly true in a transmission bay where a shop lifts a vehicle, drops the pan, and sometimes leaves it hanging for hours. We generally want to see 4 inches of slab minimum at the anchor points, poured with rebar or mesh reinforcement, not just a thin unreinforced pour from decades ago. This is where the concrete conversation gets more serious — higher capacity means more concentrated load at each anchor point, and we won’t install a heavier unit on a marginal slab regardless of what the customer wants. If you’re running two bays side by side, column placement also affects how close you can set the lifts together without arms colliding at full extension — something we check against your specific ceiling height and bay width, not a generic spec sheet number.

Anchor Bolts and Rebar: The Part Nobody Budgets For

Rebar placement isn’t cosmetic — it’s what keeps the anchor bolts from cracking the slab under repeated load cycles, which a transmission bay generates constantly with vehicles going up and down all day. If you’re pouring new concrete for this installation, we recommend rebar grid spacing tight enough that at least two bars cross under each column footprint, not just a loose mesh draped through the pour. We’ve walked jobs back from install day because the slab, while thick enough on paper, had rebar spaced too wide to give real anchor support.

This is also where the decision tree loops back to budget. A proper 4-inch reinforced pad under each column, done right, adds cost most people don’t plan for when they’re pricing the lift itself. We’d rather tell you that before you buy than after we show up to install and find the floor won’t pass. Install Logistics: Forklift, Freight, and Lead Time
