Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms: What Inspection Work Actually Needs

Symmetric arms center the vehicle evenly over both columns, which is ideal for straight up-and-down lifting like tire rotations, brake jobs, and undercarriage inspection — exactly the kind of work Iowa’s annual and biennial state inspection checklist covers. Asymmetric arms swing the vehicle forward, off-center, to clear the columns for door-opening access, which matters more for oil changes and interior work where a technician needs to get in and out of the cab repeatedly.

For a shop doing primarily inspection work, symmetric arm geometry on a 2 post car lift is usually the better fit because you’re lifting the vehicle, walking the whole underside, and setting it back down — not climbing in and out constantly.
