When an EV specialty shop in the Des Moines metro called us about adding a 2 post car lift for transmission and driveline service, the owner had already convinced himself of three things about installation that simply weren’t true. That’s common. Most shop owners have never installed a lift before, so they go off what a buddy told them or what they read on a forum. Myth: Any Concrete Slab Will Hold a 2 Post Car Lift

This is the myth that costs the most money to fix after the fact. A 2 post car lift puts a lot of point-loading through four anchor bolts, and older shop buildings — especially converted garages or buildings that predate current code — often have thinner or older concrete than owners assume. We ask about slab age and thickness before we ever quote a job, because if the concrete doesn’t meet the minimum spec for that lift’s capacity, anchors won’t hold torque and the lift will walk or fail inspection.

For the EV shop case, we walked the bay first. Newer commercial buildings in the Des Moines metro are usually fine, but we’ve seen older retrofit spaces where a section of floor was patched or is thinner than the rest. The fix isn’t complicated — sometimes it’s pouring a new pad section, sometimes it’s relocating the lift a few feet — but it has to be caught during the site survey, not the week the lift arrives on a truck. Skipping this step is the single most common reason installs get delayed or lifts get pulled back out.

Myth: Ceiling Height Doesn’t Matter If the Lift Fits the Floor Space

We get this question on almost every 2 post car lift quote: what’s your ceiling height, and is there an overhead bar? A shop owner focused on floor footprint will forget that a raised vehicle plus the lift’s own arm and carriage height needs headroom too, and some 2-post models have an overhead crossbar for structural rigidity that eats into that clearance even further.

For transmission work specifically, this matters more than most people think. Techs need to get a vehicle up high enough to work comfortably underneath, and if the ceiling is tight, that limits how tall a lift you can run or forces a floor-plate design instead of an overhead-bar unit. We always ask for ceiling height up front, the same way we’d ask about a 4-post bay clearance, because it changes which model even makes sense for the space. Guessing on this before ordering is how shops end up with a lift that technically fits but never lets a tech raise a vehicle to full working height.

Myth: Power Is Power — Any Outlet Works

Plenty of shops assume the existing outlet near the bay will run the lift. In reality, most commercial 2 post car lift units need dedicated 220-volt service, and where that circuit lands matters for how the unit gets positioned. We’ve had customers with 220 volt already run to an office area, which sounds convenient until you realize the lift bay is fifty feet away on the other side of the building.

Before we schedule install day, we ask where power currently exists and where it needs to end up. If new circuit runs are required, that’s an electrician’s job that needs to happen before the install crew arrives, not during it. Shops that skip this step end up with a lift sitting bolted to the floor but not operational for days while they scramble to get an electrician scheduled. It’s a five-minute conversation on the front end that saves a week of downtime later.

Myth: Freight and Forklift Access Are the Installer’s Problem

A 2 post car lift, especially a heavier-capacity unit for trucks or commercial work, doesn’t just show up and get carried in by hand. Columns, carriages, and cylinders on a bigger lift are genuinely heavy, and getting them off a truck and into position takes equipment. We always ask up front: is there a forklift on site, is there dock access, what’s the delivery situation.

Shops that assume this is automatically handled sometimes find out on install day that there’s no way to get a used lift off the back of a pickup truck without extra labor or a rented forklift. When a lift is coming from a different location — say a used unit relocating from one shop to another — we also want to know the condition of the columns and hydraulics before it ever leaves the old site, so nobody is surprised by a leaking cylinder or worn cable once it’s already at the new bay.

Myth: Any Two Post Lift Handles Any Vehicle Weight

Shops doing transmission and driveline work on a mix of vehicles — including EVs, which run heavier than comparable gas models because of battery pack weight — sometimes underestimate capacity needs. A 2 post car lift rated for lighter passenger cars won’t necessarily be comfortable or safe for a heavier EV crossover or a work truck. We size lifts to the heaviest vehicle a shop realistically expects to see, not the average one, because undersizing capacity is a safety problem, not just an inconvenience.

This is also where lift symmetry matters. Asymmetric 2-post designs position the columns to make door-opening and driver positioning easier on typical passenger vehicles, while symmetric designs handle a wider range of vehicle types more evenly. For a shop doing varied work — transmissions on EVs one day, a pickup the next — we talk through which configuration actually fits the customer mix before recommending a model, rather than defaulting to whatever’s cheapest.

Myth: Installation Is a One-Visit, Same-Day Job

Some shops expect a lift to arrive, get bolted down, and be running by the end of the day. Realistically, once concrete, power, and clearance are all confirmed ahead of time, install day itself does move fast — but the site survey, any electrical work, and any concrete remediation are separate steps that need to happen first. Lead times on ordering a new 2 post car lift also run a week or two on average for most commercial models, so planning ahead matters if a shop has a target opening date.

Shops that treat the site survey as a formality instead of a real planning step are the ones who end up with install delays, change orders, or a lift that sits half-finished for a week while an electrician gets scheduled.

Myth: You Don’t Need to Ask About Warranty or Parts Support Before Buying

We’ve talked to plenty of shop owners tempted by a cheaper, off-brand 2 post car lift they found online. The problem shows up later — when a cylinder needs rebuilding, an overhead switch fails, or a cable needs replacing, and there’s no parts pipeline behind the brand. For an EV shop investing in a lift meant to run transmission jobs for years, warranty support and parts availability should factor into the buying decision as much as sticker price.
