We hear the same handful of myths repeated from Cedar Rapids to Iowa City: that cables only need attention if the lift starts sagging, that a lift leaning toward the rear is just a leveling adjustment, or that cables on a well-maintained bay basically last forever. None of that holds up once you’re chasing camber and toe on a BMW or Audi with a technician standing between the columns. Myth: A Leaning Lift Is a Column Problem, Not a Cable Problem

We get calls almost weekly from shop owners convinced their 2 post car lift is leaning because a post has rotted, shifted, or was installed wrong. Sometimes that’s true, but far more often the real culprit is a worn or stretched cable that’s no longer sharing load evenly between the columns. On an alignment lift, even a small lean throws off your readings before you ever touch the alignment machine, because the vehicle isn’t sitting level relative to true ground reference. One caller with a 25-year-old unmarked 2 post described exactly this symptom, blaming worn nylon components for a rearward lean, when in our experience that pattern points just as often to cable stretch or an equalizer out of adjustment.

Before you assume it’s structural, we always check cable tension and routing first. It’s a cheaper fix, it’s faster to diagnose, and it’s the more common cause on lifts that have been in daily alignment service for years. If you’re running an older lift without a manual or part numbers handy, we can usually identify the cable spec from photos and get the right part ordered instead of guessing.

Myth: If the Lift Still Goes Up and Down, the Cables Are Fine

This is the myth that gets people hurt. A 2 post car lift can raise and lower smoothly right up until the moment a cable finally lets go, and when it does, it usually does it with a car on it. We’ve responded to exactly that call: a two-post above-ground hoist at a dealership service bay where the cable snapped with a vehicle already in the air, and the shop needed someone out same-day with a forklift standing by just to manage the load safely. Smooth operation tells you almost nothing about internal wear, fraying, or corrosion happening inside the cable strands where you can’t see it.

For alignment shops especially, cables see more cycling than a typical general-repair bay because vehicles go up and down repeatedly during a single alignment session for test drives and re-checks. That extra cycling accelerates wear you won’t notice just by watching the lift run. We recommend a visual inspection at every oil-change interval on the shop’s own vehicles, and a hands-on inspection by a technician at least once a year, more often if you’re running high alignment volume.

Myth: Cable Replacement Intervals Are the Same for Every Shop

There’s no single universal number we can give you for how long a cable lasts, and any answer that ignores your actual usage is a myth in itself. A shop doing occasional oil changes on a low-volume two-post cycles that lift very differently than an alignment-focused Euro specialty shop running multiple vehicles up and down all day. We size replacement intervals around cycle count and visible wear, not just calendar age, and we tell customers straight up when we think they’re overdue versus when they’re fine to wait.

As a rough guide, we tell most moderate-use shops to plan on a full cable inspection annually and budget for replacement somewhere in the three-to-five-year range depending on load and cycling, sooner for high-volume alignment bays. That’s a planning number, not a promise — a lift sitting in a humid or unheated bay in Iowa winters can wear differently than one in a climate-controlled shop. The only way to know for sure is to have someone physically inspect the strands, the sheaves, and the equalizer, not just eyeball the lift from across the shop floor.

Myth: Any Shop Can Eyeball a Cable and Tell You It’s Safe

We’ve talked to plenty of shop owners who assume a quick glance at the cable is enough to call it good. It isn’t. Fraying often starts on the inside wraps where the cable rides over the sheave, completely hidden from a visual check unless you know to flex the cable and look closely at specific wear points. We’ve seen cables that looked fine from three feet away but were down to a fraction of their rated strands underneath.

For alignment-grade lifts specifically, we also check that replacement cables match the original spec exactly — length, diameter, and lug configuration all matter, and using an off-brand substitute because it was cheaper or in stock somewhere else can throw off equalization between the two sides. Myth: Cable Problems Announce Themselves With a Sound

Some shop owners wait for a noise — a squeal, a pop, a grinding — before they think about cable service. Cable failure is frequently silent right up until it isn’t. Uneven lifting, where one side of the platform rises slightly ahead of the other, is a far more reliable early warning sign than sound, and it’s one we hear described often by customers who’ve already had a scare. One long-term customer described the platform starting to rise unevenly years after a repair, a symptom that pointed to a hose and cylinder issue rather than the cable itself, but the same principle applies: uneven movement of any kind on a 2 post car lift is a signal to stop and inspect, not to keep running it and see if it settles.

Myth: Cable Service Is a DIY Job to Save Money

We understand the instinct to save a service call, especially for a specialty shop watching overhead closely. But cable replacement on a 2 post car lift involves proper load management, correct equalizer adjustment, and torque specs that, if done wrong, put the lift out of alignment with itself — which defeats the entire purpose of an alignment bay. We’ve been called in after a shop’s own attempt at cable work left the platform lifting unevenly, which is a worse outcome than the original worn cable.

Myth: Every Two-Post Brand Handles Cables the Same Way
