Why Seasonal Storage Is Hard on Cables

Most restoration shops don’t run a 2 post car lift the way a tire shop does, cycling it up and down a dozen times a day. Instead, a project car goes up in October and might not come down until March or April. That sounds gentler on the equipment, but it isn’t. Cables that sit under constant load for months at a stretch get stress in the same few inches of wire rope every single day, and that’s exactly where fraying starts. We’ve seen shops in this part of the state store a body-off project for an entire winter without ever touching the arms or checking the sheaves, and by spring the cable had visible broken strands right where it wraps the pulley.

Temperature swings make it worse. An unheated pole shed can go from a warm October afternoon to well below zero by January, and that cycling causes the cable to expand and contract slightly against the sheave groove, accelerating wear at that one contact point. If you’re going to leave a car sitting on a 2 post car lift for the season, we recommend backing it off the top lock, dropping it an inch or two onto the mechanical locks, and rotating the load point occasionally if you can. It’s a small habit that adds months to cable life.

What Inspection Actually Looks Like

We tell every shop the same thing: get a flashlight and actually look at the cable where it wraps the sheave at the top of the post, not just the visible run down the middle. That’s where 90 percent of the wear happens on a 2 post car lift, and it’s the spot most owners never check because it’s awkward to see without raising the arms partway and getting a light up in there. You’re looking for broken strands, rust bleeding through the outer wrap, flat spots, or any place where the cable diameter looks different from the rest of the run.

We also tell owners to check both cables against each other, not just each one in isolation. If one side has visibly more wear or a different amount of stretch, that’s usually the first sign one cable is carrying more load than it should, which points to an equalization problem, not just an aging cable. On a two-post lift with independent columns, uneven cable tension can also show up as one arm set sitting slightly higher than the other when the vehicle is level. If you notice that on your lift, don’t just add tension and move on. Get it looked at, because it usually means something upstream, not just an adjustment fix.

Replacement Intervals That Actually Hold Up

Manufacturers publish inspection intervals, but shops running seasonal storage need a more practical rule. We generally tell restoration and hobby shops to do a full cable inspection at the start and end of every storage season, meaning once before you load a car up for winter and once before you bring it back down in spring. That’s two inspections a year minimum, more if the lift also sees regular daily use in between.

As for outright replacement, we don’t wait for a cable to fail. Once you see any fraying, flat spots, or visible rust under the outer wrap, replace it, and replace both cables on that lift as a pair even if only one looks bad. Mismatched cable age on a 2 post car lift is asking for uneven wear down the road. Most cables on a well-maintained lift last several years under normal shop use, but a lift that sits loaded through Iowa winters season after season is going to need cables sooner than one in a heated daily-use bay. Budget for it as a normal maintenance cost, not an emergency repair.

The Decision Tree: Starting With Budget

When a shop calls us about a 2 post car lift, the first real fork in the road is budget, not brand. If you’re working with a tighter budget, you’re looking at a lighter-duty asymmetric lift in the 9,000 to 10,000 pound range, which covers most passenger cars and light trucks and keeps upfront cost down. If your shop handles heavier project trucks, three-quarter ton or bigger, you need to size up to a lift rated well above the vehicle weight, not right at it, because restoration work often means the vehicle sits loaded for months, not minutes.

From there the decision tree branches into configuration. Symmetric versus asymmetric matters for door swing and how you’ll be accessing the vehicle for bodywork. Overhead versus floor-plate style matters if your ceiling height is limited in an older pole shed. We walk every shop through this the same way regardless of budget tier, because getting the configuration wrong is a much more expensive mistake than the lift itself.

Configuration Details That Change the Install

Once budget sets the tier, configuration decides the rest. Control post placement is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is that most 2 post car lift models put the controls on the front driver’s side or rear passenger side post, but that’s a convention, not a hard requirement. We can usually mount controls where they make sense for your shop layout and traffic flow, especially in a restoration bay where you want clear access on the side you’re working from.

Overhead versus floor-plate configuration is the other big fork. Overhead lifts need more ceiling clearance, generally in the 12 to 14 foot range depending on the model, but they clear the floor completely for undercarriage work, which restoration shops care about. Floor-plate configurations work in shops with lower ceilings but leave a crossbar at ground level that can get in the way when you’re rolling equipment underneath a car body. We ask about ceiling height, floor space, and how you actually plan to work around the vehicle before we recommend a configuration, not the other way around.

Concrete and Power Before Anything Else Gets Ordered

Every quote we send for a 2 post car lift starts with two questions: what’s your slab thickness, and what’s your power situation. A lot of the older shops and pole buildings we work with in this part of Iowa were poured for light storage, not for anchoring a loaded lift, and four inches of concrete isn’t enough for most two-post installs. We’ve had customers assume their slab was fine because the building looks solidly built, and we still send someone out to drill a test hole and confirm before we schedule install day, because redoing a pour after a lift is already on site costs far more than checking first.

Power matters too, especially in older farm shops that were wired for welders and shop tools, not lift equipment. Most 2 post car lift units run on standard 220v single phase, which a lot of ag shops already have from welder outlets, but we confirm the circuit and amperage before install so there’s no surprise on the day the truck shows up. We also ask about site access, whether there’s a forklift on hand, and how the building is laid out, because all of that determines how smoothly delivery and install day actually goes.

Getting Cables Replaced Without Losing a Season

The last piece of the decision tree is what happens when inspection tells you a cable needs to come off.
