Why Restoration and Metal Work Change the Checklist
A shop doing oil changes and tire rotations has different needs than a farm shop pulling engines, cutting rusted panels off a truck bed, or doing full frame work on an old combine cab conversion. If you’re planning heavy metal fabrication near your 2 post car lift, you need to think about clearance for grinding sparks, room to swing a cherry picker around a raised vehicle, and enough overhead clearance to lift a truck all the way up without the arms or vehicle hitting roof trusses. We’ve seen shops order a lift sized for daily driver work only to find out six months later they can’t get a raised 3/4-ton pickup high enough to comfortably work underneath because the ceiling in that particular bay is lower than the rest of the building.
Restoration work also means the lift sits loaded for hours or days at a time, not just twenty minutes for an oil change. That matters for arm configuration and lock engagement, and it means you want a two post design with restraint straight from a brand we trust rather than a mystery import. For farm shops doing genuine metal work, we generally steer people toward asymmetric arm designs that clear doors on trucks and give you full access to rocker panels and frame rails, which is exactly what restoration projects need most.
Do You Have Enough Concrete, and Is It the Right Concrete
This is the number one thing that turns a straightforward install into a change order. Most 2 post car lift installations need a slab that’s at least four inches thick, properly cured, without cracks running through where the anchor bolts need to go. A lot of older machine sheds and pole barns in this part of the state were poured decades ago for tractors and hay wagons, not for a lift that concentrates significant point loads on four small anchor patterns. We’ve had to turn away installs, or add a concrete cutout and new pour as a separate line item, because the existing slab was either too thin or had already cracked from freeze-thaw cycles.
Before you buy, get down on your knees with a tape measure and a flashlight and look at your slab. Check the thickness if you have any old core samples or building records, look for existing cracks, and note whether the floor is level. We’d rather tell you before the lift ships that you need a new pad poured than have our install crew show up and discover the slab won’t hold anchors safely. A rushed patch job under a loaded lift is not something any of us want to be responsible for.
Power: Do You Actually Have It Wired to the Bay
We ask this on almost every quote call, and the answer is often “there’s power somewhere in the building.” That’s not the same as having a dedicated circuit run to the actual bay where the 2 post car lift will sit. Most two post lifts run on a standard single-phase motor, but you still need the right voltage, a properly sized breaker, and wire run close enough that our crew isn’t fishing conduit through hay bales and old grain bins to make it work on install day.
If your shop was originally built for equipment storage rather than as a working garage, don’t assume the wiring is there. We’ve shown up to farm shops where the only outlet in the building was a single 110-volt plug meant for a shop light. Get an electrician out before your lift arrives if there’s any doubt, because rescheduling an install crew because power isn’t ready costs you both time and money, and installs already run several weeks out once the lift is on site.
Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance
Farm shops often have taller ceilings than a typical suburban garage, which is a blessing, but you still need to measure the actual clear height in the specific bay you’re using, not just eyeball the general building. Lighting fixtures, purlins, hanging chain hoists, and old grain augers left mounted to the rafters have all caused problems on past installs. You need enough clearance for the lift’s overhead beam if it’s an overhead-style two post, plus room for the tallest vehicle you plan to raise to go all the way up without the roof of the truck or the lift arms contacting anything above.
We generally recommend at least eleven to twelve feet of clear height for a two post lift handling full-size pickups and vans, more if you want comfortable headroom while standing on the shop floor next to a fully raised vehicle. Measure at the exact column locations too, not just the center of the bay, since older buildings often have uneven roof lines or low spots near the eaves where a farm shop was built onto an existing structure.
Is the Lift Actually On Site, or Are We Waiting on Freight
This sounds like a logistics detail, but it changes your whole install cost. If the lift isn’t on site yet when we schedule your install, there are additional charges, and lead times on new two post lifts can run anywhere from a month to the better part of a year depending on brand and how backed up that manufacturer is. Once the lift physically arrives at your shop, we’re typically booked two to three weeks out for the install crew itself, so plan your restoration project timeline around both of those windows, not just one.
We also need to know if we’re removing an old lift first. Swapping out a tired, uneven, or leaking two post for a new one adds time and sometimes new hoses, since old hydraulic lines rarely reuse cleanly with a new power unit. If your farm shop is remote, factor in whether we need a forklift on site to unload the lift, because that’s a detail our crew asks about on every single farm delivery.
Do You Have a Forklift, or Do We Need One
Farm shops usually have equipment on site already, which is actually an advantage over a typical urban garage install. But we still need to know ahead of time whether there’s a forklift, skid steer, or tractor with forks available to get a crated 2 post car lift off a truck and positioned in the bay. If there isn’t, we either bring one or rent one locally, and that gets built into your install quote rather than showing up as a surprise on install day.
Tell us this up front when you’re getting your quote. It’s a five-minute conversation that saves a wasted trip and a rescheduled install date. We’ve had installs delayed because a farm was between combines and didn’t have equipment free that week, which is a totally understandable seasonal reality out here, but it needs to be part of the planning conversation before we lock a date.
Building Access and Where the Lift Will Actually Sit
Last item on the checklist, and one people underestimate: can the delivery truck and our install crew’s equipment actually get to the bay? Farm shops sometimes have narrow doors sized for a specific piece of equipment, gravel drives that get soft in spring, or a building layout where the intended bay is behind another vehicle or piece of machinery that has to move first. Walk the entire path from your driveway to the exact spot the 2 post car lift will sit, and make sure nothing in that path needs to be moved, repaired, or cleared before install day.
We also want to know the final orientation of the lift relative to your doors and other equipment. Restoration and metal work often means you want clearance on both sides of a raised vehicle, room for welding leads, and a path to roll a cart of parts around without squeezing between a post and your workbench. Sketch your bay out on paper, mark where the lift columns will land, and bring that sketch to your quote call. It genuinely speeds up the whole process.
