Myth 1: Any Concrete Pad Will Hold a 2 Post Car Lift

This is the biggest one. We get calls where a shop has already picked a spot, sometimes already bought the lift, before anyone checks slab thickness or age. A 2 post car lift concentrates enormous point loads into four anchor points, and older Iowa shop floors — especially anything poured before modern codes, or anything with infloor heat or rebar mats — can be a real problem. We’ve had jobs where the customer specifically wanted no rebar and no infloor heat interference at the install site, and that’s exactly the kind of detail that has to be nailed down before delivery, not during it.

For seasonal storage use, shops sometimes assume the load will be lighter since it’s “just parking,” so the slab requirement must be lighter too. It isn’t. An EV sitting on the lift for months still puts the same static load through the columns and anchors as a car mid-service. We tell every shop the same thing: get the slab thickness, age, and rebar situation on paper before you commit to a bay, and if you’re not sure, we’ll walk through it with you over the phone before we ever schedule a truck.

Myth 2: Ceiling Height Only Matters for Big Trucks

We hear this from shops storing EVs and hybrids that assume a compact vehicle means a compact ceiling requirement. Not true. The ceiling height determines how high you can safely run the 2 post car lift’s columns and carriage, and if you’re using the lift for seasonal storage — stacking a vehicle at full height for weeks or months at a time — you need clearance for the vehicle plus the lift arms plus a safety margin, not just enough room for a quick oil change.

We’ve quoted jobs with 30-foot ceilings and zero bay width restrictions, which is the dream scenario, but most east-central Iowa shops are working with 12-16 foot clear height in an older building. That’s workable for most 2 post lifts, but it changes which model and which column height you should order. If you’re storing seasonal inventory at full lift height for long stretches, don’t guess — measure the clear height at the actual bay, not the tallest point in the shop, and tell us that number when you call.

Myth 3: Bay Width Doesn’t Matter If the Lift “Fits”

Fitting the lift between the columns is not the same as having a usable bay. We’ve seen shops squeeze a 2 post car lift into a bay where the door swing, the drive-on clearance, and the space to open both doors of the vehicle weren’t actually considered. For an EV storage program where you’re rotating vehicles in and out seasonally, you need enough width to drive on straight, position the arms without fighting the door frame, and still walk around the vehicle safely.

This matters more for storage-focused installs because the lift often sits loaded for extended periods, meaning the bay isn’t available for anything else. A tight bay that works fine for a five-minute drive-on-and-lift job becomes a daily headache when you’re maneuvering around a parked, elevated vehicle every time you need something from that side of the shop. We always ask about bay width restrictions up front — no restriction gives us far more model options, while a tight bay narrows the field fast.

Myth 4: The Site Survey Is Just a Formality

Some shop owners treat the site survey as paperwork that delays delivery. In our experience it’s the opposite — skipping it is what causes delays. We’ve had installs where the customer went with a cheaper lift and a cheaper install plan, and the site details (no rebar, no infloor heat, exact ceiling height) weren’t confirmed ahead of time, which meant surprises on install day. A real site survey covers slab condition, ceiling clearance, bay dimensions, power availability if you’re running an EV charging setup nearby, and whether there’s a pit or the lift is surface-mounted.

For a seasonal storage program specifically, we also ask about traffic patterns — how often vehicles rotate on and off the lift, whether it’s loaded and left for weeks, and whether other work happens in that bay in between. None of that changes the anchor bolts, but it does change which lift height, arm configuration, and even which brand makes sense. Myth 5: Installation Is the Same Regardless of Season

Iowa weather actually affects install logistics more than people expect. Concrete curing, freight delivery timing, and even anchor bolt setting can be affected by cold-weather conditions if you’re pouring new slab or doing anchors in an unheated bay during a January install. If your seasonal storage plan means you want the 2 post car lift operational before winter vehicle intake, that timeline needs to account for weather-driven scheduling, not just our install crew’s availability.

We also ask up front whether there’s a forklift on site or if we’re bringing our own equipment for unloading, because freight delivery for a 2 post car lift isn’t a small package — it’s a multi-piece shipment on a truck that needs a real plan for getting off the trailer. Shops that assume delivery day is simple sometimes end up with a truck sitting curbside longer than it should. We coordinate that ahead of time so install day actually goes to install day, not to a rescheduled week.

Myth 6: Any Installer Can Handle a Storage-Focused Lift

Installing a 2 post car lift that will spend most of its life loaded for storage is a slightly different job than installing one for daily service turnover. The anchor torque, the column alignment, and the lock engagement all need to be dialed in carefully because the lift will sit under sustained load rather than being cycled up and down constantly, which actually changes how you should check and re-check things after the first few weeks. We’ve serviced lifts where a secondary lock kept engaging on one side because the columns weren’t adjusted evenly during install — a fixable problem, but one that’s easier to prevent than to chase down after the fact.

For a shop running seasonal EV storage, we recommend a follow-up check a few weeks after install, especially through the first full seasonal load cycle. That’s not us trying to sell an extra visit — it’s standard practice for any 2 post car lift install where the loading pattern is different from typical daily shop use. Get it right at install and the lift will run for years without drama.

Myth 7: Storage Use Means You Can Skip Ongoing Maintenance

The last myth is the most common: if the lift is mostly holding vehicles in place rather than cycling constantly, it needs less attention. Actually, a lift under sustained load for weeks at a time needs its cables, locks, and hydraulic seals checked on a schedule just like any other 2 post car lift in daily use — arguably more, because a slow leak or a stretched cable can go unnoticed longer when the lift isn’t being run up and down every day.

We tell every seasonal-storage customer in east-central Iowa the same thing: put a basic inspection on the calendar every few months, check cable tension and lock engagement, and don’t wait until spring turnover to notice something’s off.
